Oh, pipsandpeeps, those big brown eyes are awfully tempting...... I'm just not ready for a dog right now.
Nava - I've had two hawks in our yard in two weeks. This is the first time since living here that I can remember having them in the yard. In the first incident my big bully FBCM Madelide actually took off across the yard at it, flying about 3 feet off the ground to scare it off! Not so easy when you're a big fat 8 pound hen, but at least her mean streak was put to good use that day! She protected my OE's little clutch of 4 week old Marans - who ironically she loves to pick on herself. Kind of like standing up for your little brother when some other kid is picking on him - then tormenting him yourself later....
Then yesterday we heard a thump against the front window and there was a dove sitting on the porch, looking kind of dazed. We opened the door and a neighbor said a hawk had been sitting on our roof and went after the dove, and the dove had escaped it's clutches and flew onto the porch. It got right back up and flew off, so hopefully it wasn't injured. Soon the flock will be inside the aviary to keep them safer.
