Kind of a rough day! Thursday we came to the reality that Almond Joy, the little bantam Cochin our Muscovy hatched out, was not thriving. She wasn't eating enough and was sleeping too much, so I started her on Sav-A-Chick and antibiotic, and started researching her symptoms like mad. By yesterday morning, I noticed she was losing her balance and couldn't hold her head straight. I started calling around for Coccidia medicine, just in case, but (Murphy's Law) it's impossible to find medicine when you need it quick. This morning, I located a source of Sulmet and Corid at a feedstore about an hour away...just try to guess the ending to this story. As I was standing in line with the medicine, my eldest daughter called me in tears, saying Almond Joy had just died! I hadn't even gotten a chance to post photos, but she was really tiny, with pretty markings.

I ended up buying two black Silkie chicks, both to keep the other chick company, and because Silkies are great broodies. We don't know for sure what the cause of death was, but thankfully we've had no illness of any kind in the rest of the flock. The buff Frizzle chick (Swizzle) is hyperactive and doing great. I'm hoping it was just one of those things that happens occasionally with the young ones, but from now on I'll keep more medicines on hand, just in case.

What a deal!!!

Wow, I am so sorry to hear that. I'm glad that the rest of your flock is still ok. I hope that they stay healthy!! I am looking into getting all the different kinds of medicines that I could need now that our flock is growing & I am so attached to all of them. I am glad that you found a few silkie babies to keep your other chick company. Good luck!
