FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

question: Is it normal for one of your gals to be mean? Like, not to me but I had purchased 4 chicks from one farm, and 5 days later, bought 4 more from a different farm. My brown frizzle cochin, she will literally cut off the new chicks from food and water and run them back into the "coop".

I have a NN roo, and he just seems to be like "whatever".

How long would you let this go until you got rid of the "mean" hen. I am worried about them getting enough fluid and food. And the crazy thing is, they are bigger than her, but in general, they are fearful of everything.

If there’s any Jax members around willing to help out withe some questions I have that would be much appreciated.

Which breeds have you foun work best down here in the heat and sun?

I’m looking to have a small flock, maybe 4-6 birds mainly for egg production for me and my family. I have a fenced in back yard and plenty of space for a coop and for them to roam.

Hi weeben, welcome to the group. The only breed I have found that did not work well for me was cochin. I lost a bunch of them as soon as it got hot last summer. All my others are great producers. I do recommend putting your coop in the shade, and if you don't have shade in the backyard, plant some trees. They all need someplace out of the sun during the worst part of the day.

You may also consider building an open air pen rather than a coop.

I have one hen that was so bad her name is "Mean Momma." Once she was old enough to start free ranging, her personality changed completely. She was just looking for something to do. Maybe separate the troublemaker until they get a little older. I have found the more space the chickens have, the fewer behavior problems I have. I do have one that I just can't reform, he is going on craigslist.

Thanks! I do have one large tree in the yard that provides a good amount of shade so that should work out well.

Just a heads up: There is an "old timers" thread on this site that has been friggin amazing! I have learned so so so much! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...l-up-a-rockin-chair-and-lay-some-wisdom-on-us If you haven't read it yet you should. I was so intimidated by all these fancy coops and expensive equipments and chickens living in peoples homes and antibx, etc...then I started reading htat thread and realized that chickens AREN"T that hard :) I hope you enjoy it, but you got put your big girl panties on before you read.

I have followed this thread for quite awhile. Some of it I agree with and some of it I don't or it doesn't apply in my situation. IMO take from it what will work for you.

That thread has set me free and made me excited about chickens again. I got my chicks, started reading other threads, and was ready to take my chicks BACK! then I found that thread and totally relaxed
