FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Heya - I'm not yet a chicken owner - but we're working on it - in the planning stage and hope to have some wee egg layers by Christmas - but please put me on your list.

We're in East Central Florida - Melbourne to be exact.

Hey sink! Someone local! How awesome!

I am not yet a chicken owner - and will take any and all advice! I'd also appreciate the info if anyone knows of someone selling a coop or run - as I'm no carpenter.

Hey - I posted this elsewhere on the site, but this is probably the best location to ask - have any of you purchased chicks from Funky Chicken Farm? I know Celtic Oaks is close but I don't think they have egg laying chickens - but I may be wrong - only saw ornamentals and ducks/geese on their site.

I'd like to get our chicks local and not have to have them shipped - and would love advice on local farmers - the breeds we're most interested in are Barred Rocks, Production Reds and Rhode Island Reds - but we are only going to have a few hens as the city limit only allows 4 hens. In other words - we're not looking for a few hundred chicks, just a few.

Hello Seatrout00 !
Stay away from Funky Chicken Farm! Look for my past posts about them. There is Triple R (I think that's the name) just down the road from Funky Chicken Farm, from what I understand they can order day olds, you can pick the breeds you want.I dint know if they have an order limit.Maybe not at this time of year but in the spring many feed stores carry day old chicks. There is a lady that is not Celtic Oaks that is in Merrit Island who is selling hatching eggs and right now she is selling adult chickens (I forget the breed)And Tractor Supply sells chicks in May?Celtic Oaks sells laying breeds but I don't think its any of the breeds your looking for. They are a bit more expensive but its because their chickens are tested and are completely disease free.(called NPIP tested)
As far as coops and runs so much on Craigslists is small or unreasonably expensive.I am lucky that my husband builds. You can see pics of my coop under my profile. If my husband didn't build I think I would start with a big chain link dog run.You can cover it with a tarp.On the inside, around the bottom you can attach small chicken wire so baby chickens cant get out,and predators cant reach in.And to start you can put a big dog house in that run.Its a less expensive way to start rather than buying a rabbit cage someone is trying to pawn off as a chicken coop or one of those micro coops someone is selling for $300-$400.
The 3 breeds you have picked are great starter birds for someone who has never owned chickens.I love the Barred Rocks as they are good layers and have great, calm personalities.Pretty much the same with RIR's.The productions reds are great layers but I have had a few beautiful ones, the one I have right now isn't as good looking. And of the 4 I have owned,2 had great, calm personalities and 2...well they were just ok.
Feel free to email me to talk chicken any time [email protected]
Christy
