"that's good-" Hazel started, but was interrupted by a pheasant walking up to them.

Tiny puffed herself up, and looked almost twice her size. She was ready to attack this pheasant.

Hazel stepped up beside Tiny and made her clicking noises. (the ones they make when they're grumpy at the other birds.)

"why are you so close to my pumpkin plant?" the pheasant asked angrily.

"It's yours?" Hazel asked, her tone smooth.

"of course it is," the pheasant said "why else would we hang out here all the time?"
She needed to be more careful. She had almost given away the location of the secret pheasant nests.

From a high perch, Pigeon watched the fight below and couldn't help but wonder of how it would feel to have wings but not the ability to fly high. Then she remembered that she herself has never flown higher than nine feet due to the confinement of the aviary.
"Have I ever," Pigeon wondered aloud, "truly flown? And if I was not stuck behind wire, could I fly high enough to touch the sun?"

(hmm... one of my quail has flown about 10 feet... is that high?
Edit: That quail ended up going over my fence and we never saw it again.)

Hazel glanced at the pheasant, anger flashing in her gaze, but she lowered her head and walked away in a dignified manner. (Imagine that... a quail walking in a dignified manner...)
