2) What is the behavior, exactly.--clumbsy, stumbles around

3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.--no

4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.--i did just change the bedding from hay to pine shavings for chickens

5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.--laying feed, cracked corn, oyster shell, water

6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.--normal

7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?--eye drops, sterile and terrymycin in water, and seperated from flock

8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? self care

9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.--saw a rooster on here a few days ago with the eye problem, but cannot find the post for some reason

10) Describe the housing/bedding in use---8x16 housing with 8 more buff orpingtons, all actings good, pine shavings,


i just want to know if im doing the right thing or if this sounds to serious for someone like me to help it, the chickens has foamy eyes, one eye is completely shut and the other is just really wattery looking, and it sounds like it has pneumonia, i can tell it cannot see as it cant even see my hand in front of face, does this sound like some serious illness, or just the bedding that i just replaced not even a week ago?

Check out Harley's Girl post from a week or so ago. I think she had her rooster have same type of problem.

i have had it for approx 3 months, im going to town to get some tylan 50, hoping that helps, if i get the tylan 50 should i take it off the tarramycan? and also the difference from harley's rooster and my hen is mine doesnt smell, but it sounds terrible, respirtatory wise, my other chickens are showing no signs of nothing, but again i did just change the bedding to something they have not been around, so im hoping that is it, but just taking step by step, hope this all make sense

I really recommend getting a swab of your bird and get it tested in a lab, as ILT has been prevelent in the US the past two years.

There are mild strains and very virolent strains. It is highly contagious and if you go to the feed store you could inadvertantly spread it, if in fact it is ILT. Please santize your hands, clothing and shoes.

I had a bird that started sneezing when I changed the bedding, but after the dust settled in about six or so hours she was fine. There was no nasal discharge, just sneezing.

There is another current posting about a sick bird that to me screams ILT....

i have a questions instead of tylan 50 would la200 work too? because thats all we have around the house at the time instead of going to town? with just the terramycin, the hen is doing much better, but to be on the safe side im going to take my precautions, one eye is completley better, knock on wood, if in 3 days it is not better i will take swabs, because if that is what it is, it is too late anyways right? the person i bought these from for some reason just sold all of his chickens?

la 200 is oxytetracycline, basically what you are giving them now, but a little stronger.

They won't necessarily die all the time from ILT, but you will have carriers of the disease and could possibly be spreading virus at any time. (again, if that is what it is)

Antibiotics will only prevent secondary infections if you have some type of virus. Keep the dust level down and try to keep the birds as cool as possible.

well this is good news/bad news, good news is, i think we can rule out that it is not any disease, the bad news is that i went into the chicken coop just a few minutes ago and saw one of my hens with a swollen leg and my other chickens were in the corner pecking at something, so i walked over there and i find a half dead black snake, this thing is huge, i take it out immediately and kill it, what do you do for snake bites, same method? antiobotics? black snakes arent poisonis, but they can make a human sick, thats all i know!
