you can use gloves, and try washing the eye with saline and treating with terramycin eye ointment or drops..

to be on the safe side..treat for CRD...

I thought you may want to read this thread about Harley. It is very graphic pics and kind of nasty just know to watch that bubbly eye close or it could look like this.

From what I hear Harley is getting better with treatment.

Heavy ammonia odor can cause eye irritation as well. Get down to chicken level and take a sniff. If you smell urine, it's time to clean the coop. Just a thought and hoping its something better than CRD. Good luck with your boy.

I have a hen that displayed those very same symptoms last winter so i immediately pulled her out of the flock and put her in quarentine. I put terramycin eye ointment that was used for a cat with allergies around her eye and cleaned it out every day several times a day. She recovered nicely but i don't believe she had CRD she never coughed or sneezed and since she has had it we have hatched chicks as well as picked up a few more here and there and none have ever gotten sick. One difference with my hen rory is that she had gotten beat up by an aggressive roo and he bit her eyelid which im guessing caused an infection. looked like someone poured dish soap in her eye. For awhile i was afraid she wasn't gonna make it but shes happy, healthy, and back out with the rest of the flock living her chicken life to the fullest. I really hope yours has the same outcome.

This is all very reassuring...thanks for your help and caring. I am going to try to find some antibiotics today. I don't know if I can give Perkins a shot or not. I will probably be crying by the time this is done.

My chickens have had the same thing. I just wipe it out, they get better after a couple days. I think its just like a common chicken cold. Im sure your chicken will be fine. :]

Update: His eye seems much more watery, mucousy this evening and he slung water out when he turned his head. I called my vet that treats my dogs and he doesn't see chickens!
I did find another vet that can see him on Wednesday. I really wanted to get him in earlier. I don't want him to get worse.

I tried to get some antibiotics at tractor supply but they only had terramycin.

I want to use something that will knock this out! This rooster is so beautiful! I just have to get him better!

TSC usually has Tylan...you have to look in the livestock section, not the poultry section..
they also have syringes..

I know it's scary to give an injection the first time..I was scared out of my wits and had my DIL give the first one since she is a nurse..
but once I did it a couple times..it doesn't scare me, and it very easy..
have someone hold the bird for you..
a skin shot is even easier...
just pinch the skin up at the back of the neck..
clean area with alcohol.
Dlhunicorn has a good description of instructions on how to do it.

I believe I can give a shot it if someone shows me first. Do the chickens usu. freak out or squawk or anything when you give them a shot?

Thats the part that scares me.

I could not get him out of the cage last night (its a long cage with a door on only one end) but today I am going to get him out and wash his eye with some saline and give him lots of lovin'

This symptom just keeps coming up lately. Can chickens have allergies? I have a Nigerian doe whose eyes are almost always goopy. I treated them with terrimycin then NFZ puffer then a vinegar wash and vitamin A. I had to go a week using alfalfa pellets and it cleared up. Obviously chickens aren't goats, but is it even a possibility. Funky as the weather has been, there must be a change in airborne irritants.
