I started growing some barley fodder for the chickens. What is the average amount of days most let it grow before feeding?

Has anyone tried growing rye fodder? A local farmer has a 50lbs bag for$9.00

i have not i use wheat if it sprouts well it should work well

We grow a mixture of barley and wheat fodder in the winter. I only let it get about 3 - 4 inches tall. The birds seem to like it better before it gets too tall.
