Sally is going to not like me for this but......

We have to weigh the risk versus benefit whenever we do something. If we own chickens - we have to decide whther we want to a) contain them in a small area, b) build massive protected areas for them to free range in a protected environment, or C) be prepared for losses.

I lose chickens to hungry predators - mine are neighbors looking for some protein. I do all I can to prevent them breaking the law and entering my property but if one of my chooks passes in front of them, I cannot blame them for making soup for their family.

The same applies to the hawk. Do what you can to stop them but respect the fact that they cannot tell that that chicken is personal property of a feisty 5'2" crazy chicken lady that packs heat.

they used to............

Once upon a time, there was a typhoon that came through. Looters decided that my FIL did not really need the lumber from out buildings that were decimated - My wife fired a couple of 12g rounds into a tree to scare them off. Now its legal to shoot to kill on your own property there, but one of the looters thought he could get some money out of a "rich kano" and claimed he was walking along the beach and I was shooting at him.

My wife is allowed to shoot as she has the license.

The local village had a hearing and I received a summons. I could face 20 years in prison for illegal discharge of a fire arm.

We focused on the fact that there were looters and that the "innocent" guy on the beach was just scared by the shots - they weren't directed at anyone - especially some poor innocent guy who was taking a relaxing innocent walk on the beach with 30 mile an hour winds.

He admitted he was only on the beach and therefore we must have not been firing at him (we just shot at a tree 4 feet from us) and he was mistaken.

Case dismissed.

No more trespassers since.

Our free rage chickens will go a little too far and end up never coming back.

These are the joys of living in paradise.

oh wow! thats alot!  I think that some of the birds of prey hang out along "fence lines" and such, so I pray being in the mnts they dont hang too long!

Sally:

I am located on the southern rim of Great Valley....they ride the currents and I am on the migratory path to Hawk Mountain....I also back up to the R5 rail line....(they perch in the trees and have a good view of a large open space). Hopefully, they will be through when my girls go outside...after I posted another hawk flew over...I think all birds are moving early this year...two blue birds flew in yesterday....

RadioMan: you;ve given me an ideal....I happen to have some extra Mylar emergency blankets,,,hang some strips in the trees....hummm
