attacking through the fence I assume? They do that alot dont they? I heard they just sit there and grab whoever comes close to them.Good post. Hawks are terrible parasites. I killed a chicken hawk with a broom handle once that was attacking quail in my front yard. They will do what they can to get food. If you can get a permit to shoot them, do it.
Isnt it funny Shellz, as I have 4 English springers and an old dalmatain and I let them out in sets to watch over and they drive the rear. They end up driving me insane with jumping up the door so I let them back in!! They need to do their jobs stinking spoiled dogs! never had dogs that didnt like to be outside, even as a group they hang all over the back porch to be left back in.I'm surprised I only got my first hawk attack in my 3rd year of chicken raising! Yikes, those are some stories! I wonder if it's just my set up here? My chooks have plenty of hiding places. I have 2 dogs in and out of the house at all hours. I do know that there are lots of wild birds that nest around my property, so are very territorial. I have seen everything from robins, blue jays & crows chasing these hawks in the sky, away from my cleared 3 acres. I admit though, that there are times when nesting season is over, or yet to begin, & that may be when an attack can occur. I do have a neighbor that likes to shoot the crows in the fall, as they are getting into his crops. Maybe that scares hawks off? Well, I'm licensed for this new season & ready for just about anything! I will not shoot AT hawk, but will try to scare it instead. Ok, gonna watch that video now.
sounds like you need to build a vacation shack for me to come visit on one of the ponds!! Sounds awesome!Silly dogs! My dogs love to be outdoors! Give them some raw beef knuckle bones to chew on outside. Never let them bring them in the house! Very messy! I do this about every 2 weeks in good weather. I have ponds too, so they like to swim to cool off. I play chuck-it with them too. Whatever keeps them comfortable outdoors. Yeah, not many dogs do much for protection against raptors, although I've heard a few that do. It might be an individual dog characteristic. Should be interesting to see what this year brings.
Yeah, that video was tough. That's the reality though. I just hate animals that can't give their prey a quick death!
sure was! And that run is tiny, easily covered. Mine is way way too big to cover and I wouldnt know how in the woods with all the trees. But I choose to let them live a life of bugs and wonder so we will see what happens down the road and if I change my "tune"The run and coop (Predator Buffet) in that video was wide open...no cover on the run and the coop looked like the door was wide open.
