OH she was lucky! All 5 of my dogs started freaking when they heard me play the sound on that video I had to shut it off!I was really happy to see this thread here! So useful!
I just had my first hawk attack a couple of weeks ago. It was something I hadn't really thought much of, I have a large run but the cheeps have a lot of hiding places (usually under the coop). Anyway, I was sitting in the living room and heard an obnoxious noise outside. One of my red stars got out of the run and was being stalked by a hawk. I have never seen that chicken run so fast. She ran right down the hill and hid under a bush by the front door. Luckily I got outside fast enough to scare it away and she was just a little shaken up. My poor buff orp rooster Ethan was standing right by the fence freaking out because he couldn't get out to save her![]()
I have to agree though that the dogs are great hawk/predator deterrents. This attack happened to occur when the dogs weren't outside. I have a great pyr mix and a border collie mix and they both do a great job of protecting the chickens. If they are laying on the deck and hear the chickens making unusual noises they book it to the back yard to see what's going on (it helps that they also LOVE to be outside). It's funny how they know the normal chicken noises from the abnormal ones. They are also great at night, if something is wandering around the backyard they start to get agitated and bark (very annoying when it's just the deer though...).
