Food and Water Placement

I keep both in coop, but water only outside. My run is 2000 sq ft for 24 pullets. It is open to sky so I do not want intruders eating the chooks food. Also do not want any lice, mites, diseases carried in to my flock by intruders attracted by feed. Also a headache to keep it dry at all times. So far, so good.

BTW, I use pvc house guttering fastened to walls via shelves that are built so that they cannot be tipped over or roosted on or pooped in. I keep feed in one, and water in other. No spills ever. Just a thought.

I keep food and water out of the coop. We release them early in the AM so they can have access to it. When it rains,tI put the food and water in a sheltered place outside the coop.
I just do not want any critters, ants, bugs, etc.... in that coop and try to deter that. Also, I take up and throw away any left over in the PM to discourage any roaming critters from the night.

I do not believe they eat at night. Mine do not leave the roost--- can't . they can not see.

I don't get up at O'dark thirty anymore, and I have both feed and water inside the coop and water in two different places in the yard for them to get to easily. I let the girls out after they've had a chance to eat and drink a bit and lay a few eggs in the boxes. I don't feel like there's any danger of getting 'bugs' and if they did get attracted, they'd just be extra food for the chooks.

I have my feeders and waterers outside the coop. I read a copy of chickens for dummies and it said that they do not eat or drink at night. BUT...for instance, today is Sunday...I like to sleep in....my coops are closed so the chickens cant get out...I got up at 6:45am not because I wanted to. I also posted a similar question a few weeks ago and everyone told me I need to have atleast water in there, but I too have a limited space. My chickens do great, no health problems, they stuff themselves before they go to bed and lay wonderful eggs.

I'd think if you were going to opt for only one or the other, I'd keep the water in the coop. It won't hurt them to be hungry for a bit until you get up to let them out, but I wouldn't want them becoming dehydrated. Although I agree, a small feeder inside would be a nice idea for them first thing in the morning.

During the summer I keep water in the outside covered coop area.
Now that the rainy season is here I've redone the inside of our small coop so that the main food and water containers are inside the coop.
I still have a smaller food and water container in an outdoor area for when they are outside.

i have a really small coop (3'x4'). I made a small shelf about 18" high, using shelf brackets and a piece of plywood. I hang their feeder (it holds 6lbs of feed) underneath this shelf, and I put their water on top of the shelf. This saves space, and also keeps wood shavings/poop out of the water font.
