Food grade D.E. ?????

Never had to use it (thankful) but have heard about using it for chickens. I sprinkle DE surrounding my Enclosure plus use insect spray around it and sprinkle granules in my yard. I ferment the girls feed so no scattering, less wild birds hanging around. I do dust them monthly rotating DE, Sevin & Poultry Dust plus dust the Enclosure. Hate bugs!

I gave up chickens years ago (mid- 80) when my house got mites. My fault, let 14 RIR sleep in the patio with the cat. That was alot of work and learned my lesson, rehomed all and never had chickens again until 2013 when I answered an ad for a "free" peck feathers chick. Got hooked, ha ha

Lol, ChickNanny! Yep, they're a bit addictive. We started out with 6 and now have 30. We keep them penned away from the house because of the bugs. We ferment the feed too and use the Korean Natural Farming bedding method inside the coop so there is no odor and the poop just disappears. We really love that.

Have heard of the Korean Natural Farming but never really "studied" it. I learned of the DLM here & have been doing that, love it. Between DLM, FF & poop board/PDZ, I too have no odor. Although some say DE is of no help with bugs, think the magic word is 'preventative' measure.

With the KNF method, I never have to clean the coop. I swap out some mulch every few months and refresh the formula, but other than that, no maintenance. It's awesome. We are building a larger coop with a covered run so they can have a larger dry area. If the KNF bedding gets wet, it isn't effective. The DE is good for mites, but it's hard to get rid of them once they start. Ick.
