get a bunch of different feed and see which one they eat the quickest but do it each morning not right after the other or provide a bunch of different bowl with the food in it not mixed and see which one they all eat

I would have separate cages and test feed for a couple weeks.
Weigh and visually check condition of birds at start.
Then weigh and inspect during test.
If any seem to start loosing weight then pull them off the test feed asap.
After end of test.. who looks the most healthy and happy.

But that is just how I would do it.

I have a scale that when turned on it will "zero" weight the scale. I have the empty box on the scale at the time I turn it on.
I then add the bird, weigh, write it down, toss bird back in to cage.

My birds are all tagged so I can track individuals if needed.
ya know those little colored zip ties? I have 10 colors... and 2 legs to tag... makes for many many combos to mark individuals

Really and truly, I didn't wanna sound like a smart-ellic......but I've read posts about weighing live birds from time to time, and was wonderin' ........ heck, do they tranquilize them ahead of time or what. I just got done chasing down and processing 67 Bobs before I ran out of daylight. Got 22 more to go.......... But I'm hear to tell ya........I think the only way to keep one of them still for a few seconds would be to stuff'em in some panty hose and sinch it up tight so that can't wiggle.....(as much

) I think they remember "catch and release" purdy good.

YEAH... UM NEW WORLD QUAIL SPECES... THEY ARENT NEARLY AS COOPERATIVE AS COTURNIX WITH STUFF LIKE THIS.... IF YOU CAN GET THEM IN A BOX WITHOUT ESCAPE THEY'RE GONNA BE SPINNING INSIDE THAT THING LIKE THE TAZMANIAN DEVIL... PROBABLY SOUND SIMILAR TOO. AND IF YOU CAN PULL THIS OFF ONCE, GOOD LUCK FOR THE REPEAT WEIGHINGS BECAUSE WHILE BIRDS MAY NOT BE THE BRIGHTEST CRAYON IN THE BOX THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THEY LEARN REAL WELL AND REAL FAST.... AND THIS LIL REDNECK AVICULTURE WEIGHT WATCHERS CLUB SORT OF THING WILL BE AT THE TOP OF THAT LIST. IT CAN BE DONE, BUT GETTING IT DONE FROM A SPECTATOR'S POINT OF VIEW? LETS JUST SAY THIS WOULD BE THE QUAIL WORLDS VERSION OF A BUGZAPPER AND A 6 PACK!
