Food Storage???

I store my feed, in the original feed bags, in a steel truck tool box my hubby gave me. It's not "airtight", but I haven't had a problem with bugs. My goats use the tool box as a bench to lay/stand on!

We have ours in the galvanized metal garbage cans, plus we scatter DE on the floor all over the part of the feed room where the cans sit, to discourage anything from crawling up the side and sneaking under the lid. So far, so good.

I use the big galvanized metal garbage cans to store my feed outside near the coop -- a 50# bag of laying crumbles just fits in one can and another can holds the smaller 10# bags of scratch, rooster mix, sunflower seed, DE, etc. Only an occasional bug gets in, but otherwise no problems. Did have to put bricks on top of cans because squirrels (unless it was raccoons) were getting the lids off somehow. The cans go through the winter rains and cold with no problems.

While that may be true, if you check the milled dates on your feed, in the winter and spring especially oftentimes you are feeding grains that were milled last summer when the crops were brought in. Corn just don't grow well when it's 5 degrees out! I don't know how you can get fresher food when there is none being sold

I could be wrong, but I think the indication is meant from the time the bag is opened.

No, it is from the time it was milled. Some bags will retain freshness longer than others, but stale is still stale.

We use two of the Gamma stackable containers that we purchased at Costco. They hold 60 lb. each so one for the food and the other for various treats such as chicken scratch and black sunflower seeds. Costco doesn't always carry them. They must be a seasonal item. The next time I see them, I'm going to buy a couple to store our flour and rice in!

Thank you Sonoran Silkies for clarifying this.

I was going to get some more gamma containers, but decided instead to get the gamma seal lids to go on 5 gallon buckets. They can stack just like the containers & I get free food grade buckets at the store. While it will take 4-5gallon buckets to store my 80 lb. bags of feed, it will be easier for me to move them around. I will also be able to clean one when it empties & keep on top of the condition of all my grains & feed. I got 12 lids for less then $7.50 a piece shipped. I will only be saving $10 or so over a 60lb. container (which holds my 80 lbs.), but like I said, my storage will be more versatile.
