Food to feed chicks?

Grit for anything you'd have to chew, too. Peeled and mashed hard-boiled eggs don't need grit and won't promote egg-eating. It's the shells that could cause a problem later, but people that grind them up so fine that they don't resemble egg shells anymore and use them as calcium supplement don't report any issues at all.

Thanks for the confirmation, Debs55! I assumed the yolk would be ok as it seems to be the same texture as the starter crumbles, but then I got to second-guessing myself.

Thanks for the info on here. My "babies' are about 5 weeks and have been giving them mealworms and scrambled eggs as treats. They havent liked the yogurt yet. I wanted to start introducing other things besides their chick starter. They loved the carrots and oats. This site is great

Hi all :) Wow, things have certainly changed in the past 20 years....went to the garden and tractor store to buy starter feed and all they had was the "crumbles" ? and none of the mash type stuff we used to feed. I got it home and ended up going back today to buy mash and they don't have any and said the "crumbles starter" was just fine? for baby chicks? Is that true? or should I try to find the mash online as my 15 chicks will be arriving in a bit less than 2 weeks? We only have the farm and tractor store here, so would need the time to have it shipped if I really need mash, the really really fine, powdery kind of feed. I am having to learn new things as the "old way" I used to do things is apparently not the way things are done now??? Thought I knew what I was doing...now having second thoughts...thanks for any answers/advice :) Oh, I have 15 barred rock's coming...straight run, unfortunately, as it's so late in the season, the hatchery is only selling them that way :( I DID want ONE rooster ;) but fingers crossed, it's a bit less than half and half, like they said :p
