This is Betsy, she is staying with us for a while. When she came to us her we were told about her limp, presumably from a rooster, but yesterday we noticed this on the bottom of her foot. We now think this may be causing the limp. To me, it looks like she has something impacted but I’m miles and miles from any kind of expert. So here I come to you lovely people looking for advice.

That is a typical bumblefoot scab, and bumblefoot is a bacterial infection, usually staph, that causes an abscess. It may or may not be causing the limp. You can try soaking in warm Epsom salts water or a disinfectant solution to try and soften the scab to allow it to be removed. There is usually a solid yellow core inside the scab that can be squeezed out. Some people use Betadine povidone iodine with a little sugar to make a bandage to wear for a couple of days to use as a poultice to help soften the scab.
