That is wonderful now I feel good that there are people like you who like to recycle, today i found lumber worth at least $60.00 and I swear the builder was glad when I told him that I need the materials for my little farm's projects.

Dumpster diveing...recycling...call it what you want....but I call it THRIFTY! We are still working on our new coop....its 12 x 30, and will have 4 seperate pens and a closet. All the materials were either free...or really cheap. ( like 2x4's for .50 cents a piece. Going to get another 70 more for the finish of the coop.) Heck, keeps this stuff from the landfills....I say...great job! Oh, and I Love that coop!

Construction site dumpster diving is a no-n o here too. But, I do trash day cruising. If you put it on the curb I can have it - right?? I got some great finds that way and I don 't care if people look at me funny.

Years ago when we were first starting out we found a whole living room set, sofa, recliner, three tables, all sitting on the curb! We knocked, too good to be true right? But, they were throwing it all away. We were back in no time with a trailer. That was our living room set for five years until we gave it to some one else.... And it all would have ended up in a dump. They didn't feel like hauling it to good will.

Hubby says I can squeeze a buffalo nickel till the buffalo burps!

Wow, great looking coops! Amazing that you got the stuff for free but also very good craftsmanship!

I've been wondering the best way to get access to old deck wood (usually going to be pretty good stuff / redwood, etc.). I was thinking www.craigslist.org would be the way to go, but good free wood isn't often posted.

I then had an idea: Find contractors that do decking on CL (in the services section) and contact them saying you are interested in getting the wood from their next deck tare down. You'll haul for free, etc. If you can't find any takers, maybe sweeten the deal... say, $50 - $100 to them if they let you know when they have a deck or fence tare down that has lots of decent wood left.
