I just switched from pine shavings to using sand in my coop.. so far so good! I scoop it daily and it has been a breeze... what I want to know is.. do you just scoop the poop and toss it on the floor of your run? Or do you put it in something to dispose of... and where do you dispose it? I have been just tossing in run but I was wondering that if over a long period of time I will then have a build up of sand in my run as some of the sand gets tossed with the poop....

You can toss it in your run as long as you have a deep litter system set up. From my experience, though, poop mixed with sand doesn't decompose well and becomes very, very dense in a short period. Also it will hold onto moisture, and too much of that in your run isn't a healthy thing.

I have sand in both coops and runs. It's proven to be highly to my liking. I have no smell and the sand is easy to keep clean and dry since I have a covered run.

I use my poop scoopings on the wild grass surrounding my house and coops. As I mentioned, I had bad luck decomposing it in my compost pile for garden use, but the grass loves the stuff. I scoop it and take it right out and toss it on the grass. Rain and snow eventually washes it into the soil, so any smell from it is short lived.

That’s exactly what I needed to know! I do have deep litter but I will toss it on the grass in the yard.. my yard could definitely use some fertilization! Thank you so much!
