Hi Everyone,
Jason and I have gotten a lot of info from this website over the past few months! Jason wanted to start a chicken project with the kids this summer, so they would have some real chores and responsibility at the farm. When he started talking about it, I was thinking maybe a couple dozen chickens. Apparently, I was way off... At the moment, there are about 180 chickens at the farm, though about half are butcher chickens. By my count, that still leaves 80-90 hens. And we have about 70 eggs in the incubator.
The kids (especially our daughter) spend a lot of time just hanging out in the hen room talking to the chickens. Most of them are quite tame and eagerly run to anyone who walks in the door. So far, it's going good. The kids easily handle the birds and the birds seem to be fairly social. We'll be looking for our first eggs in August.
Is it normal to get carried away so quickly? Thanks to this site there are so many breeds we want to try. Jason converted one of the unused cattle barns into a chicken palace. He has several insulated rooms; some with heat for the babies and others with runs into open air areas.
Hopefully it all goes well. We really enjoy this site!
Have a great day,
Mandy
