How many chicks do you have? I have just started raising chicks for the first time and I'm LOVING it! We have 6 chicks- 2 Black Australorps, 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Ameraucana, 1 Barred Rock, and 1 Rhode Island Red. We're a family of five and at least my husband and I eat eggs daily, but I will use the eggs in baking for my family too. I called the City and asked what rules are and they just say no rooster, but there is no limit on chickens as long as you keep things clean. I thought maybe since it's our first time raising chickens that five would be enough, then we added one more, and now I hear our local store has chicks in. Ugh, I'm fighting temptation to add more. But I don't want to push my luck with neighbors. So I'm just curious how many chickens/chicks those of you living in town have??

I'm just outside of Seattle, and usually have 3-5 chickens, no roos. Right now 3 hens.
Legally I'm allowed 5 hens, no roos, but my non chicken neighbors keep telling me that I should get more, and some roos.

I had never heard of chicken math until I read it here, but it's totally true. I texted my husband that the local store has in chicks now too, and all he texted back was a smiley face lol. Probably meaning "enough is enough".

In my neighborhood we are allowed up to 15 hens, no roos. And they are supposed to be pets who happen to lay eggs; we're not supposed to use any of them for meat. We could, technically, have more hens, but would need to apply for a special permit.

Even if all your neighbors, except that one that walks around the neighborhood looking for stuff, want you to have more chickens, I would not. It only takes one neighbor to cause a problem.

Who am I kidding. My neighborhood only allows 2 hens. No roosters. I have 7 hens. Started with 8 and had to rehome one that ended up being a LOUD rooster.

Besides the home owners association will have to either look at your pictures or send someone out there. Just miss a few chickens in the picture or have a few visit a good neighbor when someone has an appointment to come look.

In my neighborhood we are only supposed to have three hens and no roos... but I have five hens and they are two weeks old. They are ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love them to death!!! They are Rhode Island Reds

My city ordinance states that you have to have at least a 5,000s/f lot to have 3 chickens. Every 1,000s/f extra you can add another chicken. We have a 21,000s/f lot (0.49 acre) so we can technically have 19. I hope to have that many someday but our coop will only comfortably hold 8-10, especially since we live in the pacific northwest where it's so rainy most of the time. I don't want behavioral issues with the girls from being bored and cooped up all the time, so we're sticking with what we have (11, hoping a couple are roosters so we can have less but if not, and I can't find a home for a couple, we'll jsut see how it goes over the next few months as they grow into their coop) and can always add more later.

Im in a bedroom community outside of the city and our ordinance was just changed last summer. I have and am allowed 6 hens, no roosters, enclosure, and no butchering in the city limits. All easy enough. I'm sure I'll want more but I don't want to push it. My neighbors didn't even like my cat when I first moved in, so Im trying to be very quiet about my chickens, lol.
