Good article, I knew most of it though. I have kind of followed what you do since you said you were a roofer. See my BF used to be a roofer and I know how hard a job it is (just a bit hotter and more humid here in GA but notheless still a very hard job). Anyway, my BF does flooring now but I still like to show him what you are doing and mention to him that you are a roofer as well. Helps to inspire him to build me more chicken pens

Seriously - we'll be making a road trip to visit once the weather gets better. I know you're not that far but I have snow driving issues

Didn't you have capons too? Didn't see them on your website. Want some fryers and a roaster too. If you're ever heading this way, holler!! I have a friend in Norwalk who wants to try some too.

Hey I'm always here... just shoot me an e-mail when your coming. You will have to make a day out of it as the National Park here is beautiful and it's very cool to say the least.

Cool, keep up the good work. In the future, it wouldn't be at all surprising to see people referring others to your work, like they do with Joel Salatin.

I didn't realize you're just a pup, though! Very few people have it together that well by your age, (I don't, and I'm 52) you've done well.

I don't know about that, but I do know that I'm having a ball doing it! It would be an honor to someday be referred to Joel's work. He is what inspired me...

Ya, I'm just a pup... I get that all the time! I hang with a lot of old time farmers at the markets and we usually go out to lunch afterwards and I'm the butt of the age joke... but I dish it out too... As far as having it together... Haha... I take it one day at a time just like anyone else. I may look calm and collected but my brain is in overdrive, hard to sleep at night with all of my ideas bouncing around up there!

Didn't you know... I do it all by hand! LOL... those days are over.... thank god... my boss from my roofin job gave me a small loan to by all of my equipment to get started. He looks at it as the faster I do chickens... the faster I can get back to work. As I would have to miss about 3 days to process 200 chickens. Not anymore... we can do that in a few hours. (two people) He is a great guy... couldn't ask for a better boss.... to answer your question, I have equipment from www.featherman.net Great people to work with...

I couldn't imagine roofing in GA heat. I have enough up here... I don't think the heat would be so bad though... as it's around 120 on the roof sometimes in full sun. I brought a couple of eggs to work once and we cooked them on some flashing... All we did was put the metal on the shingles and cracked the eggs on the flashing.... Hot Stuff...
The humidity would be insane in GA... that is what would do me in. When it's humid here in July... I go through a couple gallons of water a day. No joke, as fast as it goes in, it comes out... and not by using the bathroom... it's all sweat to keep your body cool. I always tell new roofers when they come.. to make sure they hydrate the night before but they never listen... Instead they hydrate with beer. The next day the stop sweating about noon... and that's when the trouble comes. Throwing up... all I do is keep working and laugh.. and say... "somehow, I told ya so just isn't good enough" LOL...

Thanks for all of the nice comments... I'm glad it's inspiring to some. I know when I first started I loved to hear peoples stories about how they got going. It's neat to watch something grow... and inspiring if you have the same interest. I will keep everyone updated as time goes on.... but as of tomorrow I have 300 more to process and I'm done for a couple months...

Just a quick question Jeff and I appologize if this has answered already, but how much income do you usually get from the business? I was laid off a year ago and I'm looking for some supplemental income and I have 20 acres to play with.
