For those who lock up their birds EVERY NIGHT:

My girls get "locked up" at dusk by an automatic pop door closer. Since I live in a suburban neighborhood, I let the girls out for about an hour before dark. All I have to do is gently say, "Who's ready to go in now? OK, Come'on everybody, it's time, let's go get a snack". Every single gal comes running to greet me and gets inside the run where I generally serve them a BOSS snack.

I don't do a head count. I do a color count.....three reds, three barred, two white, two black.... yippie they're all inside. Then at dark, the autodoor closes. I'm gone by this time and have never found a chick left oustside that missed the call to roost by the sound of the autodoor. Smart chicks!
