For those who were asking about a lower watt red bulb

Instead of a plug in dimmer, buy an electrical box and a dimmer switch like you would have on the wall. Cut one side of the cord, feed it through the electrical box and screw it into the screws on the dimmer.
Light bulbs last a much longer time at a lower voltage (meaning when dimmed) due to the reduced stress.

I saw a thread from someone on here that has a picture of doing this, but it really is quite simple - just make sure you do it BEFORE putting the plug in the wall.

I have an 85W red flood light. I got it from Walmart.

This was last year. I would assume that they still have them this year.

Does that work well? I live in a very rural area and have had a lot of trouble finding anything but the 85w bulb. The chicks will be inside my house if that makes any difference.

I used it inside my house, and it worked very well.

I had to have a hotter bulb outside in the hen house, but it is still going down into the 20's at night here. The chicks have pretty well feathered out, but that is pretty cold.

But when they were inside the 85W red flood light worked well.

I have heat lamps in 50, 75, 100, 150, and 250 watt from Petsmart. When I need to lower the brooder temp I change the lightbulb to a lower wattage bulb. I can't raise the bulb higher becuase my brooder has a solid top. So I change the bulb! The 250 is way too hot for my brooder though. I use it in the shed if we have a chicken isolated.

We used a red bulb from Rona. Its 100w, was cheap and works great. When i bought my chicks i was told to buy a disposable metal pie plate to put over the lightbulb. Same idea as the reptile light covers but for 99cents. It keeps my chicks sleeping corner at a perfect temapture, and was cheap. The temp stays at a steady 95, and i just raised it a bit every week!

Yikes!! I got one at Petco today and it was $15.99!! But I was glad to find it, LOL. I got the 100 watt infra-red heat lamp. My babies are lots more comfy!!

Here ya go folks. This works great and ya can dim 2 lights at once. I posted this before but since it was mentioned .... And yes the bulb life will be much longer by running them at a reduced output. If you are going to have to buy all the stuf here is what ya need 1 4square box, 1 duplex recept, 1 cover for 4square box that is for a duplex recept and a switch, a couple of wire nuts and a cord with male end. You should be able to put all this together for about $10-$15. Plus the savings on electricity and extended bulb life. If you have any questions about this feel free to contact me.

Also when using heat lamps make sure to use a good light fixture that is made for heat lamps not the cheap plastic base ones they will melt and become a hazard !!!!!!!!!
