I didn't think about that. I had just always raised mine up and it never really got too hot so maybe that's why I didn't have to do that. Thanks.

I found the 100 watt and the 250 watt bulbs at Wal-Mart around December!!

Yep...got mine at petsmart...totally worth it! Last summer when I set up my brooder in my sunroom(in June)...I used the 250watt bulb and even after raising it it was still pretty warm in there. I had a friend of mine come over(who has raised chicks her whole life) and she said "You're overheating them!!!" AHHH!!! So she told me to just use a standard 100 watt bulb if they were going to be inside. So this time around I wanted to upgrade to the red lightbulb so it would be a little more calming at night rather than 24-7 living under a reg. lightbulb. So far it has been great!!! Someone else on here mentioned buying a regular ceramic heat emmiter(which they also sell at petsmart..no light at all ..just emits heat...made for lizards and such) I loved the idea of it but no so much the PRICE!!(LOL) I think it was like $35??? Anywho...I'm rambling...Happy Brooding Everyone!

I have a ceramic heat bulb, and they are pricey. Hubby "made" me buy one, said the little chickies where having trouble sleeping cause the red light was too bright.

I also have a light fixture that has a dial on it so I can adjust the intensity of the light/heat on the other side of the brooder. as they get older, I turn down the light.

Yep! I 'bout burned down my house with a heat lamp! I found a plug in dimmer switch that I use for mine now. It wasn't cheap, with shipping it cost me 18 bucks, but I figured it was cheaper than the deductible on my homeowners insurance!

I did the same thing. the local farmers union has red 250 watt bulbs for 7 bucks. I paid 14 for a dimmer switch at HD(plan on reusing it). I just hope it doesnt make the bulb life shorter, as I notice the bulb make more noise the more you turn it down.

I have a 25 watt reptile heat lamp in my ten gallon aquarium/brooder. It works great the first week. The main brooder has a 75 watt reptile heat lamp I got at Walmart last week (got it from the pet section; similar bulbs in the lighting section were twice as much!). Both are the nocturnal varieties, and I haven't heard any complaints from the tenants! I also have a 20 watt red bulb just for ambience.
