For those who's spouses don't play along....

I thought I was the only one with this "wanting more chicks" disease.

I havent even gotten mine yet! My hubby one day jokingly said that I could get a few chickens. So that is a yes to me

. I said oh I will only get 4 chickens..then I increased the number to 6 chickens because I wanted two of this and that..now I have increased the number to 8.

Like I said they arent even ordered yet and I already have the disease! I really cant get more than 8 this year.. his face gets more red with every number I increase. I still need him to help me finish the coop..lol. I have to wait till the end of the month to order. They probably wont even ship till mid april. I told him though the most I'd ever get is 12. See that gives me room to grow!

oh and a quick question. Any of you trim your babies beaks so they dont peck at each other? Not sure if this is something I want to do but dont want cannibal chicks either.

My spouse is the one that started this addiction for me, he wanted chicks one year and i didn't... He ordered 50 anyway despite me telling him not to order them. 52 chicks were sent and i didnt have a clue how much i would fall in love with them, 27 died in the first few weeks from getting tooo cold during shipping and we got rid of a few more... Here i am 3 years later with about 50 chickens and still want more. He told me NO chickens in the house or garage ever. Needless to say the shower is full of chicks, the office is now a coop, and there are tons of chickens living in the garage

poor guy just can't win! When he tells me to slow down i tell him its all his fault

. I am the sole provider for all of them, i buy the feed, i take care of them. All he does is eat the eggs and occasionally cuddle with his favorite rooster who also lives in the house. If i ask for help with the chores he throws a fit like a 2 yr old.

I am so glad I don't have this problem! My hubby doesn't mind how many chickens I have. In fact, when I talk about downsizing he throws a fit, says it's stupid to down size, because think of all those eggs I'll be losing if we down size...

He also races me to the coop to beat me to collecting the eggs

I like my wife so no games for me

She lets me sustain our flock although she knows I spend more on them than I make from them. Oh well, that is why I have a job right? To support my habits!

I have never had their beaks trimmed, I believe that is more for the egg houses where they have thousands on the floor at a time. If you don't want them pecking at each other, you use a low intensity light, or red (or some times blue) light. The super bright lights seem to cause pecking.

I'm with ya'll!!

I started my flock last year with three - first time in the city, and predators got them...so this year DBF and I decided we'd get spares and planned for six. Well, to keep 6 I thought I should start with 8, but 10 was the minimum order from Ideal. So 10 it was.

DBF was surprised, "How did it get from 6 to 10?"

After the peep order arrived - with packing peanuts - the count was up to 16. Since that was so far over already, I figured DBF wouldn't notice if I brought home a couple more from the feed store...so 18. I gave away the 6 packing peanuts, so now I just have the 12 pullets. DBF just shakes his head when someone asks me how many chickens I have...I hold up 6 fingers and say "12."

Despite the head shaking and eye rolling, DBF is the best - he's building a new hen house for me - hope it's big enough!

So a quick update from the Original Poster!

I went down to get four more (I had 4 Golden Sexlink and 4 SLW originally, then added 6 more Golden Sexlink and 2 more SLW). I wanted to get some more SLW so it wasn't obviously more Golden Sexlink, but the feedstore was out. I was going to get four, but they only had 6 left so I took them all. Then I noticed they had some little dark red/ginger things and asked them about them. Turns out a gal got a few "packing peanuts" with her ideal order and gave them to him to get rid of. So I picked up a dark Red guy with a tiny spot of black on his head (most likely some sort of sexlink ?)

So I now have 16 Golden SexLink 1 whatever and 6 Silver Laced Wyndottes. I knew the gig was up with the new color in there

, and hubby was going to notice. I even made a new brooder because it was getting so crowded in that little box. Guess what? NOPE! Didn't even pay attention.
