We are allowed to have 10 (per city code)

My husband said as long as he has six egg layers he doesnt care how many Bantam Cochins I get. But city code only lets me have 10, hmmm

I will just raise babies and then sell them, get my fix that way

My DH didn't know I was getting more chicks until the day they arrived. Now they are big girls and I'm ready for more but now I have to build a new coop because I'm out of room. He goes out every day and gives them treats. He wanted another tractor and some implements. I'm in my 60's and he is about to turn 70. How much time do we have left????????? I agree with the other posts. It's give and take.

I've been pretty lucky. Several years ago I wanted chickens and DH said no way. I wasn't happy, but let it go. Then late last summer he said "Ya know, we might want to consider getting chickens." I was then the one who said "No way!" But after a day of thinking about it I said "OK. We'll get some". And I ran with it.

What was funny is that he said that we should consider it...not "let's do it"! I started reading and researching. Built a coop in October and on Nov 1st we brought our first 5 chickens home. Then over Thanksgiving we got 7 chicks (one died) who are now 16 weeks old and in the larger 2nd coop I built! (well, the four hens are. We were able to rehome the two roos who were needed to give 20 lonely hens some lovin')

We have 4 goslings who will be here April 1st and 25 chicks who will be here mid May. And DH? He's totally on board and is the one who wanted geese.

Now...if I can just get him to be on board about getting some Nigerian Dwarf goats! Don't think I have a chance of sneaking a couple of those into the barn without him noticing!

Saved some extra grocery money and cashed in coins here and there from the big jar of change. I've got $19 in cash hidden and a roll of dimes that's $5 to spend on chicks this week.

(This is the only thing I ever hide from my husband, in case anyone is worried.

My DH is not on board with the chickens at all, though now he's to the point where he mostly just rolls his eyes. He'll like them better once they give him eggs...and I figure if he can subscribe to comics and collect them, then I can...subscribe to baby chicks...lol. I have plans to slip 4 marans and 5 other chicks into the brooder tomorrow. I doubt he'll even notice. We got six ducks the other day and he didn't notice them in the incubator until he was laying on the couch and I brought some in and put them on his chest.

It's hard when you love something and are slightly obsessed with it and your spouse isn't, but I figure there must be some reason opposites attract...right?

This is a great post! I think my husband THINKS we should only keep 3 or 4 of our new babies. Truthfully, I got straight run knowing many would end up being roosters. I know I can't keep a lot of roosters with only a few hens. I don't think he minds the chickens at all. On the way home from work today, he was telling me about the different breeds at Rural King that were in the store...one's I DON'T have yet.

Now, if I can get him to build me a bigger hen house, that would be fantastic! We have a large run but a small house. I have 5 hens right now and think this house can accommodate 7 or 8 comfortably. There were only five days that they were not allowed outside this winter so more might be okay but I want healthy chicks, not crowded chicks.

He thought I was nuts when I came home from visiting a friend that lives on a farm and told him I wanted chickens. I spent the winter doing research, found this site, and then waited axiously for spring to arrive. I missed "chick day" but finally found some chicks to buy. I started small - 6 pullets, lost one. He stated they were all mine, all the chores, etc. Hmmm...who lets them out in the morning? Who gives them treats? I do put them to bed at night...and I clean their house and yard. But, honestly, it's now pretty much a joint venture. We don't make money off of them but we gain so much joy from them.

Long story...but I have 20 baby chickens upstairs...AND he is LOOKING at more......

My DH grew up on a farm. They had pigs and cattle. And row crops and hay. The owner would some times get ducks or turkeys to raise and sell to butcher. When we moved to the farm he said no livestock. I didn't really want any either. Then I started helping a friend who has chickens and sheep. Got hooked on the chickens. So I cleaned out the old shed and got a couple of hens and a mean rooster. I convinced him to help me build the nest boxes and roosts. He rarely helps with chores but if I need something built he does it. And he really likes the eggs.
