Forecast is -18 deg ... coop is not heated ... too cold 4 my biddies?

I do have frostbite on my leghorns, but all the rest of my chickens are doing fine at -10. We are getting -20 on sunday.

I am not heating my coops.

I did add a heat lamp today its going down to -15 tonight with winds and tomorow night -24 with winds.I was just talking with an old man that has had chickens most of his life and he was laughing at me and said they don`t neat them heat lamps,in all my years I have never seen a chicken freeze to death.My breeds are cold hardy but they sure liked that heat lamp they were all trying to get under it.My coop is insulated but I still worry about them when it gets this cold and windy.

Poor things ... I bet my chickens wish they were adopted by someone who lives further south! They are doing fine but they hate the snow and spend most of their time in the coop. They're looking forward to spring just as much as I am!

It got down to -23 last night. Everyone was fine today. Plenty of food and water. I do feel for them . If it was me I would be dead, but they seem to handle it well, even the peafowl. BTW...it was a good 20+ warmer in the coop then outside. I really have no insulation and I only have a galvanized base heater for the water. I think I have the right amounts of bird square per feet and good ventilation. I think the key is good food and water with no drafts.

Our coop isn't insulated and we have cold hardy breeds...BUT our chickens are like family and I wouldn't deny a family member an extra blanket on a cold winter night!!!

We insulated our coop, 8x10 foot 7 foot ceilings. when its -25 (-13f) celcius outside, its only about -5 (23 f) inside. the coop door is always open and there is a ventilation hole in one corner to keep the frost to a minimum. It is forcasted to go to -36 (-29f) tonight. We have 6 hens 2 roosters 3 ducks. Not heated.

Should be no problem. Although they do eat a lot in the cold. Give them lots of water. Warm but not hot. Change it twice daily in extreme cold weather.

I was very concerned about our 4 hens and 1 roo - similiar forcast here - calling for 30 below tonight, plus wind. Our coop is small (about 4x4) and is not insulated. For the door there is just a piece of fabric covering the entrance (they are safe from predators, the coop is inside a covered chain link run). I have no heat lamp, just a regular 60 watt bulb on at 430 am for extra daylight and off when the sun pops up. I was really concerned about them (last night was fridgid as well) but now I feel less so. My littlest boy helped me add a thermometer to the coop, just next to the roost bar - checked it at noon and its 20 in there - only 5 outside! WOW! They are out and about in the covered run and seem perky and full of it as always. YAY - I am sooooo relieved and so much less worried - I plan to not change anything tonight and will be checking them at day break tomorrow....

body heat works wonders sometimes it pays to keep afew extra in winter for body heat.

We just turned on the red heat lamp for overnight as it is forcast for -32 celcius (-25 f). this should just make it a little more comfortable
