Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

that is probably why you cannot find any studies related to that.
The study I was talking about compared them which is why I brought it up. It was used as a reference in the study @Perris posted so I wanted to see a comparison with respect to the other enzyme discussed.

Don't forget - they only need 10 feet of run space. It's like saying it's fine to have a dog in apartment. Sure you can, but are you going to walk it 5 times a day? When does it get to run and be a dog?
Same for chickens. They need space to explore and be chickens.
Sorry for the advice from a newbie. I'm a lifelong dog owner though.
But at the same time they need AT LEAST 4sqft per bird of coop space even if they never ever go there other than to sleep or lay eggs.

Bub-bub and the 3 hens (all bantams) got shut out of their coop when they stayed up late & the auto door shut. They all squeezed into a medium cat carrier normally used as a spare nest box. So approximately 2 sq ft….

Usually double check all is ok & glad I did. Transferred them into their coop - much more space in there :gig

My brooder-raised chicks get a similar pet carrier to sleep in and sometimes they try to go back to it if I've left it lying around. Six 9-10 week olds all piled in there the other week  I've had fourteen mixed age but younger chicks in there in the past!

The "roost" is missing at the moment because I needed a bit of scrap wood for a bodge fix but some of my 5 month olds (not in this picture - these are younger) sometimes choose to sleep in this old barrel that's meant to be just a day shelter. Maybe I should write it up as a coop build article :lau

Thanks. It has become obvious that my flock of five has exceeded the carrying capacity of our backyard without some aggressive land management on my part, so I’m looking for plants.

Last week we let them onto a patch that had a lot of spiny sow thistle, and they mowed it down in two and a half days.
It's pretty alarming just how quickly they can strip a given area. It's also instructive for the keeper because if one is going to continue to range them, one needs to adjust ones view from garden to farming land management.
