TO: ANYONE AND EVERYONE IF YOU WANT CHICKENS WITHIN FORT WAYNE CITY LIMITS PLEASE READ !!!!

I am applying for a variance in CH157 of the zoning ordinance from the city of Fort Wayne. This is the livestock ordinance which prohibits having chickens in the city. It is going to cost me $500.00 to file this appeal and I have no assurance that it will turn out in my favor but, I am willing to try.
I am a stay at home mom. I want these chickens to not only supplement our food supply (we also have a big garden) but, to teach my son responsibility and about a world that exists outside of video games and iPads. If anyone is interested in splitting cost and turning this into something bigger and trying to change the law all together LETS DO IT!!! If not I would still love the support of others or hey, come down to my hearing and see how it goes. You could be the next !!!! Please check here for updates on what date my hearing is and please contact me if you want to try and come together on this or even if you have any information that might be useful.... my email : [email protected]

ALSO.... the office to call regarding this matter is Department Of Planning Services. AND....The person to speak to regarding chapter 157 of the city code is Mr Bryan Mcmillan 260-449-7607
the paperwork you need to file is a Board of Zoning Appeals/Zoning Hearing Officer Application. Remember, you are filing a USE VARIANCE .

Another cool side note if you get the variance if is not just for the property owner it is for the property itself so anyone who purchases the land my have chickens!!! COOL

Please don't let me be the only one fighting the battle or we will never win !!! Please help us to keep our chickens and make a difference for all the other people in Fort Wayne who have dreams of owning their own !

ONE MORE THING !!! i will be starting an online petition so even if you are not interested in being physically involved your virtual signatures will be greatly appreciated!!! Link will be posted ASAP!!!

I would love to have a couple of egg laying hens in my huge backyard. Please keep this thread updated so I can follow.

My mother lives in Fort Wayne, I know what she would say if a neighbor wanted chickens in her neighborhood.
Does she not like chickens? lol Reminds me of my mom. My parents live in a subdivision run by a homeowners association (on 3 1/2 acres!) and they aren't even allowed pet rabbits! My parents are fine with this. Not me! That decreases property value, imo. Who wants to pay big money for a house and land when you don't even have property rights? Still I can accept this type of restriction if set at the establishment of the subdivision; only then it is a citizen choice. I do not, and will never, support stringent government restrictions. I don't have a problem that my county zoning law does not allow me to have a Tyson type of farm on my 1/3 of an acre. There are no limits on the number of chickens or roosters that I can have, as long as it is not a "large commercial enterprise." That isn't stringent. Stringent is: 5 hens, no roosters, coop so and so square feet, must be so and so square feet from said property line, no selling of eggs or chickens, etc etc etc The drones will be measuring the coop sizes and taking pics of the flock pretty soon!

Hey, I just came across this forum by chance. My parents live in Fort Wayne and were just forced to give up their chickens a few days ago by ACC. They loved those birds as pets. They were told to get rid of them or they would be cited and fined. The person with ACC was frequently seen driving up and down the street slowly keeping an eye on things until the day that he went back to make sure that they were gone. Aside from the stalking, this person let himself into their house to check things out. My dad has had run-ins with them before over the chickens but ACC couldn't prove that what he was doing against the ordinance and so, was able to keep them. I wish you luck and will pass it on. I will check back.

So, it's okay for ACC to take chickens, but a dog tied in a backyard with no visible water/shelter can bark endlessly (no less than eight hours)?! Weird and not fair! Would LOVE to have a couple hens for purpose of supplementing eggs to our household.

I wul really lilke to see the ordinance changed, too. I called the Animal Control here in Fort Wayne, in. and the lady said yhou cannot have any livestock within the city limlits, she understood how have in hens would help a lot of people. I 'd like to have just an average of 4-6 hens for eggs and hobby. Any one know of tghat person who has been trying to get things changed.I am expecting to have an opportunity to help my brother and his wife up in rural Whitley Co., but that is a 23 mile drive each way. Thanks ahead of time.
