forum reorganization

It would just be one more click- if the topic stays popular it would be on the first page, if it doesn't remain popular it would drop off the first page.

So after you click Breeds Genetics and Showing then you would click the subforum you are interested in.

*click* Genetics, Breeding, and Showing
*click* Cochin Breed
*click* Cochin Breed Discussion (or whatever that thread is called, not familiar with that particular one) This would be the thread that you are already active in.

You already click the first and third times, just the second click would be additional, also if you have a question you would be able to post a new thread about it so all the info for that question would be in one place.

I am REALLY gonna miss being able to see at a glance ALL the recent threads under the "Breeds, Genetics & Showing" forum. I always pull up the forum and read what threads have posted since my last visit. I ALWAYS seem to find something new to learn, or perhaps to help a fellow member with, outside of my particular breed favorite threads. I won't be searching 100+/- breed subforums to do this.

Guess I'm just one of those old-timers that subscribes to the K.I.S.S. principle ~ Less is More. Just seems a lot easier to start with one simple addition of a "Search this Thread" button, before reorganizing the forums. And it seems that the Mods already have their hands full moving new threads to their correct forums as it stands now.

How about a forum titled "If you need to find something in a long forum, use "Search"?

How else do folks create relationships, but with common interests? I find the breed forums to be very informative AND friendly. I don't think they need changed at all.

I can seldom see ALL the recent threads at a glance, they usually run to two pages (and sometimes three when I haven't looked in 24 hours).

Same here - usually about 2 pages of thread titles for every 24 hours. That's usually what I'm checking, which I try to do once a day. I don't open every thread - just the ones which titles pique my interest. I'm already subscribed to several of them, so I'm reading frequently throughout the day as I receive email notifications (just don't tell my boss!) But I save myself time for a general overall review of several forums, auctions included, when I get home and settle in.

I totally agree with the original poster like I stated my opinion on chat closing a lot of times I have posted questions on there after receiving no response on multiple of the breed threads. There have been times where it feels like us newbies are being ignored simply because we ask a "dumb" or obvious question but all of us have to learn on here somehow some of us don't have the same means as others and we do things on a smaller scale.

I have met a lot of really great people on here who will help someone out in a drop of a hat but also others who don't have a problem turning their shoulder to you. Which isn't fair we all can be experts nor can we all have a million birds everyone starts out new and learns as they go but it would be nice for people to be a bit more respectful of peoples feelings and questions and a big problem I've noticed on here is be careful how you word things newbies may take things to heart as realistic as what your saying maybe just be respectful and don't hurt anyone's feelings. On another note if you don't want honesty sometimes its better to not know the truth whatever it may be

The "Show Recent post" function would still work like normal.

We DO- need a way to 'sort by forum' (during the 'search recent post) then all the BG&S would all be grouped together all the Emergencies would be grouped... all the GJ&F.... all the WBOGIT? would be grouped... ah that would be wonderful.

Wait, this would break up the huge threads where you may get skipped and your post would be on top. If its a specific breed then it would be posted there but if its generic question just in the main forum, exactly like it is now. I don't think this will increase or decrease your chances of a repeat question being answered- sometimes that happens- but if you ask a repeat question in the middle of (name of Breed here) Thread it may just get missed because of all the other questions and answers at the same time.

Those threads would still be there! They would just be moved into their own subforum. One more button push, that's it... and then the general questions that Mrsfoote is talking about would stay higher up in the "Recent Post" list so her question has a better chance of being answered.

then people who are not getting an answer can post a question, just for the other lovers of that breed/experts/breeders

Right now they are threads not forums, and the search function on this site can flood the person searching with too many hits.

Some people don't always pick the right search terms and get bad results

Ex1: Marans
Ex2: Marans egg
Ex3: Marans Egg color
Ex4: Marans egg color chart

The Staff have been reading and discussing the great ideas and feedback in this thread. A few decisions that have come out of this discussion:

1) Re-read our 3 points here regarding multiple threads/topics on the same thing, what should be reported and who should police the rules, better subject lines, better / clearer initial posts to establish the tone of the thread.

2) Official Topics: We've decided that titles / subjects of threads that are not started by our staff members should not include the word "Official". There are no qualification, authority, etc. that qualifies anybody non-staff (that we know of) to start an "official" thread on a particular breed, or any other topic. (If a long term elected president of a specific breed wants to contact us about starting and maintaining an "official" breed thread we may be willing to grant limited authority in this case)

We've removed "Official" from many topics. If we've missed any, please report them.

3) Search: We recognize the limitations of search and the inability to search within threads. While it is a very huge undertaking to add this feature, it is on our todo list. In the interim please make sure to create VERY clear and descriptive subject lines. This is one of the best things you can do to increase the efficiency of search because it allows peeps to "search in topic subject only ".

4) Sub Forums: For now we've decided that this isn't something we are going to add to BYC. While there definitely are some pros to adding sub-forums, we've had discussion and found that, at least for now, the cons of installing, managing, moderating, organizing, etc. would outweigh the pros.

Thanks again for all the helpful and friendly discussion and suggestions. Please feel free to keep them coming. We're listening and doing what we can to help!

Well you have the ability to create scripted custom searches (like you did 'search2')

Can you go to the "Notable Reference & Breed Thread Discussions" and put in really narrow custom searches? The FQA just in BG&S but just have it pull all of those topics.

It could be posted under the Notable Reference for that thread.
