Foster Parenting

We should get a placement Saturday, I'm both thrilled and nervious.

Also you can ask on freecycle for bridesmaids dresses people no longer want (almost none of them are worn twice) and people are usually happy to get rid of them (I had one bridesmaid, told her to wear whatever she liked, but many girls aren't as lucky).

Thanks.

My brother was the one that wasnt really happy with being a foster child. He gave them trouble. He wasnt a bad kid really. Just not a very happy kid at the time. He was raised with my parents, I was not. So when he got taken away from them it was really hard on him. Was a little different for me. I was raised by my grandparents and had just got back with my parents after my grandpa's passing. I had just been with them for almost 3 years. I was lost. But my brother was furious. He didnt make it easy for them to foster him. Not all kids want to be fostered even if they are up for adoption. its something you always have to keep in mind and try to deal with if it happens when if ever you take in a kid to foster. Dont take it to heart and try to understand it from their point of view.

I think the laws for Canada and the states have to be fairly similar--it;s all for the safety of the kids. As in, no knife blocks on the counter, cords to blinds need to be fastened. cleaners and medicines need to be up high or locked up. We have a pond in our horse pasture, but iti s fenced in. We have to put a gate up at the pool entrance. We have a rottie, but no issues there, the case worker met him and he';s fine, but he will be monitored since he is a large "dangerous " breed. (He;s a suck) the only concern is the size of the windows in the basement, where the extra bedrooms are. When the worker was here today, i asked what she thought our chances were, and she says she thinks we'll be okay. but it's up to the fire inspector. We have two exits out of our basement, and two different routes to access the exits. So, it;s a waiting game. If they don't like our dog, or they say we need to change out the windows (which would require tone of moola, then fostering would have to wait. We love our dog, and we essentially can't alter the windows. Its a deep basement with a poured concrete foundation. So I;m praying it all works out.

So, if this all goes through, would it be wise to pick up some extra clothes? Lice treatments? Advice please?

Nix for sure, I'd snag bug spray as well, for strays.

If it's like here, they will call you and tell you "we have a pair of sisters 3&5, they were living in a meth house we just raided, can you take them?" Then you say yes or no, and in my case, send hubby to walmart etc for some size 3&5 jammies, and do the rest of the shopping once you have them so you can adjust sizes etc. Hmm, it may be a good idea to buy a few plain blue T-shirts, say size 8 and 4, incase you get a child with litterally no clothes, but I'd limit that to maybe 1 shirt in 3 sizes (toddler, kindergarten, older child), and then you can grab clothes once you know thier size.

I did it for years before I had my own biological children. I specialized in hard to place (ie: acting out) teenage boys. It was the toughest job you will ever love. My heart got broken so many times . . . I can't wait to do it again one day. I think once my kids are grown and gone I am going to take in special needs babies. everytime I even think of foster parenting I hear the song words . . ." I got me a fearless heart, strong enough to get you through the scary part . . ."

Well, we don't have any meth houses around here yet--not that you hear of anyway (but then we are just an hour west of Detroit, so who knows what comes over the border) My kids are eged 13 and 11, and we are taking (if approved) 4-10 yo's I have lotsa outgrown cltohes from them, I guess i should hold onto them.

Hey Boyd

I FINALLY got the packet from the local system. I guess they are not going to have any classes locally until school starts up again in the fall. At least not in this county. But am I able to take the classes in any county? Just wondering?

My grandma did it for awhile and I helped out we redid the whole bedroom. I painted it and set up a bunkbed and a crib. I changed diapers and all kinds of things. They had a couple probs like my cousin has Muscular Distrophy and one of the foster kids was older and stronger had turned off the lights when he was in there and pushed him down and sat on him, but other than that it was fine I thought it was really fun.
