Found 2 baby Canadian geese

I certainly understand your apprension in keeping the ducklings. I actually hatched an egg from a Canada female that was killed. Totally bonded with her and then found out just weeks later that it was against the law. Well guess what? I'm now a wildlife rehabber! I could not stand the thought of not being around these beautiful creatures. I have 4 Canada goslings that I'm rehabbing, legally! I've had domestic geese and ducks but they do not compare to these guys.

This is the goose I hatched 2 years ago. Even though she imprinted on us, she had enough influance from her own kind to fly away. I was sad but so glad that she knows she is a goose and can go out there and make goose babies. She comes back every now and then with her beau.
How did you become a rehaber? I would TOTALLY love to do this!

Nala, the smaller of the two decided that s/he was going to make his or herself at home tonight. Followed my wife into the house and after exploring the kitchen and living room, decided that our German Shepard's bed was the perfect place to take a nap.

Look up the North American Migratory Birds Treaty - and the related ACT - it is FEDERAL law in three countries - Mexico, the USA and Canada - and has been FEDERAL Law for about one hundred years.

Keeping wild Canada Geese is very likely illegal - and not just a bit illegal - like a very big deal You might want to separate yourself from those goslings rather quickly.

So if you find a Canada gosling abandoned you should just walk away and look the other way.

Well here is the deal. As of this afternoon, we lost Nala due to heat and being out in the direct sun. Ming-Ming was also VERY near death and was just laying there next to Nala. I knew something wasn't right when I went outside today to check on them and neither of them started to "peep" and come running like they normally do. So, with that said, we have decided that Federal regulations or not, we are going to care for Ming-Ming. I brought Ming-Ming into the house and put him into a warm bath. I didn't want to use a cold bath and risk him going into shock from the extreme change of temperature. He lay ed there in the bath water for about 30 minutes until he finally started to drink. Also, while he was soaking, we noticed that he had bleeding from somewhere under his wings. I'm assuming from how he feels, the sun dehydrated him so badly that he was basically chafing to the point of bleeding. Another 30 minutes later and after taking many tiny drinks of water, he was able to stand on his own and started to show signs of gaining strength. i took him back out of the bath, dried him off a bit and since he's been SLOWLY walking through the house. He's still VERY lethargic and refuses to lay down and rest, but at least he's moving on his own and starting to preen a bit. Also, he's not eaten anything yet. We tried game bird feed from our other ducks, grass ect. No luck as of yet, but I'm hopeful since he's slowly regaining strength.

Now, as for you that have suggested that we remove ourselves from them and those that think this was such a bad idea because of rules, laws and regulations, think about what may have happened to BOTH of these wonderful and beautiful birds. If this was your children and you had to choose between doing something illegal to save their lives, I'm sure you wouldn't choose to walk away and leave it to gods hands. Also, if you have read my posts, the local police are fully aware of us having Ming-Ming and not one word or concern has been brought to our attention. I'm sure if it was such a big deal, we would have heard from the DNR, Feds or whoever is in charge of this by now. It's been a month, that in my eye's is more then enough time to notify us if there was a issue. Heck, they sent us notice about our dogs tags and told us we would be fined if he wasn't registered within a month of seeing him. So I know we are clear with Ming-Ming. Call the cops, report me to the moderator, call and report us to whoever you want. We will NOT allow anymore harm to happen to these amazing creatures!

Southernpride....I want to thank you for your post. It's inspired us to take a stand and to move in the right direction. I've been looking into how to become a legal rehabilitator and will soon be applying for the permits needed. Thank you, you are an amazing person and would love to get the chance to talk with you some more.

I'm so sorry to hear about Nala after seeing her laying in your house on a the dogs bed, I was in love, she looked so sweet. Why would they just lay there in the sun and die without getting up and getting out of it? Thank goodness you found Ming-Ming I hope he makes a full recovery.

I'm glad I could be an inspiration! Never thought I had that in me, nor to be the caretaker of wildlife. I had seen an article in the paper about the a lady taking care of 4 orphaned otters in my area and called the phone number from the article. MS Wildlife Rehabilitation is the organization that grants licenses to volunteers. I attended their workshop this past spring and am now permitted thru the holder of the licensed rehabber. I've chooses to only take in songbirds and waterfowl. There are strict rules you will need to adhere to but at least you will have the peace of mind that what you are doing is legal. ;)

Thanks Miss Lydia, I'm also not too sure why they didn't go under the tree like they normally did. Ming-Ming I think is currently missing Nala. He's been to the door several times as if he's looking for her. I feel so bad for him. He's laying on the dog pillow like Nala used to now. He still won't eat, but I'm still hopeful. He's coo'ing like he normally did, so I'm taking that as a good sign. Time will tell. I uploaded a video to Youtube to share, however it's still processing. I'll link it once it's complete.

This is Ming-Ming about 5 mins ago laying on the pillow like Nala used to.
