Found a butchering video- Method I am going to use

Do you think it helps the bird at all having the bag over it....saw a video once where the lady would do the slash and then lower them into a trash can that had a black trash bag in it...she seemed to think the darkness made the chicken more calm during the death process.
Not sure. I just let them bleed out on the ground and it snowed 2 feet the next day. I did it away from the other chickens, as they would have been all over that blood, which would have disturbed me.

They were all over the plucking area.. Savages!

I have the cone sitting over the 5-gallon bucket. I have the trash bag lining the bucket. I put the bird in the cone, bungie cord the legs, grab the head gently, slice the jugular, pull up the bag, and the bird bleeds out into the bag. The bungie cord really cuts down on the kicking problem.

Yes chickens are savages!

Ellendeerranch sounds like a good way to not witness all the stuf that bothers me. I may try and incorporate that into my setup.

I have learned alot from this thread. Thank You to everyone for such great info and input!

I've also learnt a lot. I was debating about how to go about it. I can't handle the suffering. If the chicken is stressed, then I wouldn't do it. I found a video a while back (will try to find the link again for you guys) where the chap wrapped the chicken in a towel and laid in on a block of wood. The chicken seemed to be relaxed, just lying there. He there chopped the head off. Because it was wrapped, there was no flapping.

We did the deed for the first time Sunday night and used this method. It was as brilliant as killing can be. I didn't cry, which says a lot. The birds just went to sleep in their towel. They did, really, eyes shut and everything. They never knew what hit them. The first one wasn't wrapped quite tight enough, so he came out flapping, but the second was perfect. I did trim some of the hackles, just a little, with scissors, so my OH could see where to hit better. The chicken slept through it all.

Sorry the pics took so long I've been very sick. This is nothing fancy at all

The bottom board angles the whole thing more correctly for a clean kill shot.

The feather duster is just a prop to show the chicken

Showing gun angle and point blank, my husband was holding the gun and he isn't a good "actor" when done correctly you can get a great angle shot perfect for instant kill even w/ the long gun.

Hope that makes it clear.

Thank You Kassundra for posting the pics!! That is very helpful. I could easily build that myself and looks like it works very well. Thank You so much for taking the time to post them!

@ Kussandra, I found the box to our BB gun I was talking about. It says .177 Pellet and BB gun metal barrel. It is a hand pump gun though. Is your's a hand pump gun?
