Hi everyone, looking for some advice... This morning my boyfriend went to let the chickens out into their run and he found a chicken dead.. all were born in the spring, so not very old...i have 20 layers and 1 rooster. And it was one of my white plymouth rocks... He said he inspected the chicken and there was no blood or way that anything could of gotten in the coop. i put them away and checked on them the night before and all were roosting, and never noticed anything out of the ordinary... He said he found her under where they roost. Any idea of what happened? would greatly appreciate some feed back.

sincerely,
one said chicken lady...

many things could've happened. Since you said they were all same age and young, it's not age. She could've been sick and you not noticed, or some other natural death.

Sounds like sudden chicken death.. Probably a heart attack. I would check her over for mites and lice just to be sure. Sorry to hear about your hen. :(

Thanks, I was working a double, and my boyfriend already burried her... will keep a close watch on all the others.

Sorry for your loss..
Your not alone. One of my hens died a week or so ago. There was nothing in her behavior to lead me to believe anything was wrong.
I considered the idea of her falling or being pushed off the roost as a possibility. It seems unlikely, but possible.
All the other girls appear happy and active.
