Ships crossing the alantic would use it as well, both eaten as a cracker, and dipped in "broth" (hot water) for a soup.
that's what we'd call good old Aussie 'damper'... you're not meant to throw it on a tray in the oven though...
you are meant to roll it into a ball and then just toss it into the coals of a fire!!!... scrape it out with a stick in 15 mins or so, crack off the scorched outside and eat the middle with jam!!!!
Sheesh Boyd-I didnt know what hardtack was.. I thought it was emergency rations for chicken food until someone couls get to the local pet store! I hope I never face a food shortage emergency
