Found a... Rooster?

Yes they do get louder but I can’t remember if sudden or not, best to have a rehoming plan for him asap...I was able to keep my rooster somewhat quiet by putting him in a box where he can’t stretch his head, in a shed, and letting him out around 10 each morning. I worked evenings so you might only be able to take him out earlier but at least it’s not 4am! Mine was a Silkie though and they usually have slightly quieter crows

Another related question- as roosters mature, do their voices typically become louder gradually, or is it more of a sudden change in volume? I'm wondering if we need to have a rehoming plan in place ahead of time, if he suddenly develops a loud voice. Thanks again!

If there's any chance at all that you won't be able to keep him, then yes, have a rehoming plan in place ... just in case. And yes, they can get louder as they mature. When the hormones hit, some of them get, not so much "louder" as, shall we say ... more persistent? With that in mind, if there are no plans to move in the near future ... you may want to think about placing him. In the meantime, enjoy him. He's really a nice looking boy!

As a footnote ... I don't always listen to my own advice. My noisy boy lives in the house at night. just in case the neighbors have an issue!

Barred Rock - maybe he will be soft spoken roo. If there are no near by roosters to egg him on. He may stay quiet.

Please do have a plan. Roos are hard to place in the burbs, because so many folks get them when they weren't expecting to. I hope you can keep him, and he turns out to be quiet and nice, but the odds are against you.

We do think he's beautiful and sweet. My husband teaches middle school Ag, so had connections in place already where we can likely re-home him. I think we'll reach out and make a "maybe" plan now, in case he does as we expect. Thank you all for the help!

Beautiful Barred Plymouth Rock rooster! The loudness/frequency of the crowing depends on the chicken. Some are actually quite quiet if there are no other roosters in their "territory," but some just like to crow a lot for no reason.
