Found Hen

Hey BillM2

I have not experienced scaly leg mite here but yeah, I believe suffocating them in Vaseline does the trick.

I wish I had an answer for you but it is a personal choice.

I choose to have a closed flock and only increase numbers via hatching here; I am not keen to take the risk of adding birds; even moreso those whose history I am not familiar with BUT, as mentioned, that is just me.

She may be fine, she may not be a carrier of anything nasty and she may just fit in beautifully

I've read a couple of pertinent articles here and thought I'd post links to them for anyone else who finds themselves in a similar situation.

And a fairly extensive discussion on Marek's:

Though I believe my hens were all vaccinated at birth, I decided not to take the risk. I found a nearby poultry farmer who is willing to quarantine the bird then introduce her later. Though in our estimation the hen looked quite healthy and was clearly handled judging from her demeanor, there's no telling what she could be carrying. Hopefully nothing.
