Found my first chicken. What is he?

Chicken math: 2 silkies =1 chicken. Therefore you can get at least 6 silkies, and one other big hen!

I've been looking at silkies. Looks like I'd want to carry them around and cuddle them. I'd be washing them all the time to keep them sparkling. Definitely NOT a yard bird! Paris Hilton should be carrying one around!

Cochins like to be held as well. My daisy is a frizzle Cochin and she is the softest chick I've ever seen, she mostly has down feathers. I had to give her a bath yesterday because some one pooped a wet one on her entire back. She didn't mind and was making all those sweet noises afterwards while sitting in my lap. My speckled Sussex is super sweet to us and the other chicks just like the frizzle Cochin. Silkies are really cool looking, I'd love to get a hold of a splash color. It's hard to decide on a breed. I have 7 breeds out of 8 chicks. My favorite are the cochin and SS. I do love them all though. I've raised all my chickens to be lap chicks.

How
is she looking? Hen or roo?

Some new pictures of Nellie taken today. She's getting so big. She no longer looks like a chick. She's almost a chicken now!

It was so hot today, and she was panting, so after I cleaned her cage, she got a little bath. That got me wondering. Can chickens swim? Do they like sitting in water? Her water dish always looks like she's been sitting in it.

I've been reading about sexing chickens. I read that rooster chicks will develop a small pimple like bump on the leg just above their toes where the spurs will develop. Do hens have that pimple too, and just not develop them? I checked Nellie this morning and there are pimples on her legs just about 1/4 inch above her feet. If my information is correct, I have a rooster.

Kathy

I have 6 pullets of varying breeds and they all have 'pimples' where a rooster would have spurs. Yes, mine are all girls for sure.

Keep up the awesome job you are doing with Nellie, she's lucky to have found you.

She looks just like out Jersey Giants when they were about a month old. I'm new to chickens too, but I can say she is the spitting image of our Jerseys. She looks like a hen to me, but again, we're new to this

Good Luck! We love the newly found Joy of Chickens!

Thank you for rescuing Nellie

(chickens can't swim - sadly some drown when well meaning people leave water around in one container or another and they fall in it...)

I was thinking of keeping it indoors in a cage, like a pet bird. My parrot comes out at night, why not my chicken? But yes, if he's going to be an outside chicken, I'll have to get a friend. Yipee! This is such a friendly bird! It cheeps when it sees people and wants to be around us.

Kathy

I think it would be happier outside so it can find bugs, take dust baths, etc. I also agree that you'll need to get a friend for it. "One is the loneliest number..."
