My husband let our flock out this morning at 7:30, as usual, I seriously just went out to give treats and check waterers and just to see them and I found one of our girls dead. There are no Mark's on her body, she doesn't seem to be pale. She was just dead in the run next to the coop. All the others are fine. Now I'm scared I'm going to start losing hens. Any advice? I check them regularly for mites or anything of that nature. Yesterday she was behaving like her normal self.

How old was the hen? What was the temperture? Did you see anything strange, in her eyes perhaps? It could be Sudden Chicken Death Syndrome or she could've been stung by a bee or wasp. This happened to one of my mother's bantams a while ago. She didn't know what had happened but found a bee (minus stinger) while cleaning out the coop.

She was almost seven months old, I looked around and didn't see anything but that doesn't mean there wasnt a bee or wasp. Thank you for your knowledge.

I didn't look in her eyes, I will now, and the temperature here is 79°, but I have 4 different water sources that are always full and a fan inside their coop.

Is it possible she ate something poisonous or the food could have been moldy? How old was she, could you have happened to leave any string in the run?
Not that I'm aware of, I clean the feeder regularly to prevent this, and make sure not to leave foreign objects in their run, although I do have neighbors but I'd like to hope they wouldn't mess with them

So the heat isn't a likely culrpit then. Let me know if her eyes look strange or normal. It can also only be one eye. Ours looked like she had a stinger in her eye.

Eyes look clear and normal, she was a flighty girl, as most leghorns are, I'm wondering now if she didn't try to fly out of the run and maybe break her neck hitting something. Idk, I'm just worried for the other girls now.
