Hey, went to look for eggs today and Henrie was in the nestbox. Felt under and there was one egg (hers) and it felt sticky so I lifted her up and there was...something...underneath. There was white and yolk, like there was a broken egg, and this strange thing that felt a bit like rubber...

Brought it back in and cut it open to see if it was solid all the way through or what...

Has anyone see anything like this before??? Henrie has been a really consistent layer, Barbara was broody for AGES then she started moulting but she is now laying again, and Ina and Clara have been on and off but Ina has not lain for really a long time and she has had floppy eggs as well, so mostly think the ''thing'' was from her....?....so, anyone got any ideas?? Thanks! Hehee, maybe it's some sort of plug

What is the inside like? I appears to be like tissue/meat? Is that correct?

That is one malformed egg

What % protein are you feeding?

The inside is quite hollow, with meat and tissue crossing around inside and a load of runny goo came out, it feels just like rubber! Don't know about protein, they are free range, so they get bugs, grass, herbs, baby frogs, anything they fancy, and we get layers pellets from the market where we got the hens, and they have a slop, of mostly potatoes, beans, any vegetable leftovers, cous cous sometimes to thicken it, rice, all sorts, bread, bits of cake (if you are eating outside they stand on your knees and nick it out of your hand!)...Yeah, they are all fine! As fine as they can be when it's raining, they are just hanging around in the logshed looking grumpy....so, I'm sure they'll be alright, but any more ideas are great, TY.

I would watch that pullet.

..and I'll add, that doesn't look good. Almost looks like part of the internal egg laying machinery.

I hope it isn't.

thats what I thought too... like an ovary duct or something....

To the OP:

You're giving cooked potatos without skins right - and no lima beans?? Cake... isnt a good thing to give them - anything sweet really should be avoided like that

sweets will rot their teeth.

wow thats wild....

if chickens had live births i have a guess on that would be....

does it have a smell? like necrotic tissue?

was there liquid inside or was that just water from your hands that had dropped on the table?

wow. That would freak me out. It looks like a chicken heart, but not from that end of a chicken!
