Found these babies!

From chick pics on Internet, I am guessing they are wood as well. They have like an orange tipped beak that I didn't see on the mallard pics. They are alive & still jumping this morning. I did see them peck at the chick starter mash I made.

Why are wood ducks so tough to get to eat, just curious. I'd have thought til reading posts that they would be just as easy as any other duckling.

From my understanding wood ducks aren't a domestic breed. I haven't seen any breeders trying to sell wood ducks.

I also hunt duck (I know, some people probably see this as some gross form of cannibalism or some such but whatever), and I can tell you from first-hand experience: wood ducks are just about the hardest duck to shoot. Unlike mallards that flare their wings when they come in to land and can be called in by a good hunter, wood ducks dart around like swallows in the air, they roost in the trees, are a much smaller target than most mallards and can't be called in very easily.

They are not wood ducks (i'd LOVE to find baby wood ducks just hanging around..lol) Mallard chicks and wood ducks do look similar, but mallards are yellow like these and brown, where wood ducks are more of a creamy grey color and brown..so unless the lighting is off on these pics and making them look like they are yellow and they're not..then they're mallards. No special care. With wood ducks at first it's hard to get them to eat..i raise them with call ducks and then they learn..you can get another duckling of a domestic breed..like a pekin or something and they will learn to eat from them..that really the only "special" thing to raising wood ducks or mandarin ducks ...but i really think these are mallard ducks..which are super easy and if they're already eating on their own then just keep feeding and watering them and they'll be just fine:) glad you found them!!

Also..there are PLENTY of breeders who sell wood ducks..they are not domestic, they are wild..and absolutely beautiful ducks when they're grown. Not sure why you'd shoot them, they're pretty small and i wouldn't think that they'd have much meat..lol

I don't think its cannibalism at all I am from a hunting family, lol. I haven't seen them for sale but can find eggs all over for them. My parents raised them 30 yes ago in N.Cal but they aren't alive to ask. I was just curious they are so pretty
