I found her this morning. She is an eight week old silver laced Wyandotte. She is in a coop with her 5 siblings adjacent to a coop with 3 older/larger Svart Hona’s (my suspect’s). She was still actively bleeding and a clump of missing feathers were in the adjacent coop. I washed the area with a diluted betadine solution and applied a triple antibiotic ointment and put her in the house in a small cage with food and water with electrolytes in it. She ate and seems to be acting ok. Is there anything else I should do for her?

Thank you...i appreciate the feedback. I am a first time chicken keeper and I was hoping i had done what was correct.

You did good!
Good sign that she's eating and drinking.....so no shock.
Might want to trim the feathers away from edge of wound so they don't get stuck in there. Keep flies away.

Thank you...yes I didn’t think about the surrounding feathers. Yes, they are getting stuck in the ointment. She’s in the house so I don’t have to worry about the flies. I can imagine what a problem that would cause!

Just a quick update on that bloody chick....she’s doing so much better! The skin has sealed over so it’s not raw flesh anymore and not oozing at all. She escaped her little pen area today and found her way back to her flock. I let them hang out and range throw out the day and none of them even seemed to notice the huge chunk of her neck missing. I expected them to pick on her. In any case I wanted to say thank you to the folks that put their suggestions forward to help me...I really appreciate you!

I agree with everyone here. Get it clean, keep it clean and I would use blue kote or vetericyn on it. Separate her from other hens. Don't introduce back into flock until she is healed. Even then, if there are feathers missing and she is red, use Blue Kote, because it is blue. Chicken are attracted to red for some reason. She is going to be okay. Do you know who the aggressor is?
