It looks like a pigeon/dove crossed with a chicken. This bird was on my porch last night and today and I can't identify it. It is also wearing a band around its left leg. I don't know who I should contact about it or if I should have the local shelter come pick it up. Seems to be tame.

That looks like a Runt :)

A lot of times the band numbers are registered to certain pigeon clubs, your local pigeon club can help you find the owner. Another resource you should try BEFORE contacting your local shelter is Pigeon Talk. This web forum is invaluable to pigeon owners and unprepared rescuers-- they can help you read the band numbers, find your local pigeon club, and tell you how to properly care for this bird while you locate its owner-- I have rescued several birds over the years... many times the owner was only a 1/2 mile away from where the bird was found.

Tumbler pigeon? Or somebody's stray racing pigeon. Google for your local racing pigeon club. According to my local pigeon racers it is common to lose young racers and have people find them in their yard, porch, pen, coop.

Well I have been unsuccessful at finding this guys owner so today I used a blanket and caught him. Brought him to my local Humane Society and they reassured me that they know of other resources to help find its owner. Thanks for all the great help I received here on Backyard Chickens. Hope someone's missing him!
