So yeah, all the signs are pointing to the RI Red being a dude. Even though some females have the pretty iridescent tail feathers I just think that's not the case here. Besides growing faster and larger than the other three I did a check on the saddle feathers that are starting to develop and they come to more of a point than being rounded. We also just did a test and separated her/him from the other three where they couldn't see each other. A few crows (not as developed as an adult but still very distinct) were quickly belted out by the RIR. Prior to that I played a you-tube video of a rooster crowing and although all my chickens perked their ears and seemed very interested, it was the RIR that started making a fuss, flapping his wings and ruffling his feathers. Case closed...she's a he. Time to start looking for a new home...sad.

Thanks all for your help and thoughts!

Matilda hen - mine have black feathers on their tail that have a slight sheen to them but you really have to look for it. It's not brilliant emerald like the roosters. Yours sound pretty! Purebred? Where did you buy them? Curious.

hi indigosands! yes my girls are purebred snobs lol they think they are too good for some hybrids we also own , and are beautiful thanks! i bought them of a well known breeder , when 2 of our hens were taken by a pinemartin! one of them (louise) dosnt have green tail feathers but thelma does :) and also here is a cross of one of them , crossed with a scots dumpy!

You know what I think you have?

I think that your chickens are a Black Sexlink x Black Sexlink cross.
We done that cross and got everyone of those colors plus others from crossing them together.

Just my .02 cents worth.
