Fowl pox is running through flock-one really bad bird I need help with

My welsummer died yesterday. I put her in her own cage in the coop with her own food and water. I also filled a dish with yogurt. I started giving .1 of a milliliter of an antibiotic a day that our dog vet said might work for chickens. She received three doses (three days) of antibiotic before she died. Her fowl pox actually cleared up about three days before she died. her comb got quite pale before she died. My chicken caretaker said that she got droopier and droopier every day she came to give her antibiotic, until she came and she was dead. She also lost a lot of weight. Any ideas as to what she had? her fowl pox basically gone, so it was obviously something else. I was hoping that the antibiotic would help, but I probably was to late with it. Well, I guess it is live and learn. Tough way to learn.

The fowl pox in the flock is calming down. My buttercup is better, and my SLW is cleared up. I used beta-dine on my buttercup's comb.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully it will continue to clear up and I will have no more unfortunate cases.

Could of been from the Fowl pox....but....if it was (or almost) cleared up I would think that she might of had something else along with the pox. Maybe worms, mites, other parasites. Were her eggs normal? Egg drop syndrome or maybe a egg busted inside her.

I'd check the rest of them over really well for mites/lice and bring a stool sample or two to your vet (if you can) to check for worms. Often times when they get run down from something else the parasites take hold. As jeslewmazer suggested, that may have ultimately been what killed your wellsummer.

Is this the same thing? She is only 6 months old. She also has yellow around the inside of her mouth.

What can I do to help her. One side of her face is really swollen.

do you have antibiotics? I think I'd have her on something, also are you treating her face with anything? neosporin w/o pain relief or generic.....yellow around her mouth sounds like fungus,

I wouldn't even know where to begin with antibiotics. It started about a week ago. She got wet in the rain then the next day her eye was foaming and looked sick. One other had it also but he is better,she looks worse.

My flock had fowl pox last summer. I have around 30+ chickens. I just kept a close eye on them. I didn't treat any of them because they were acting like they normally do. The pox cleared up in a few weeks. I just added some new birds to the flock. I suspect they will be initiated into the "pox pals" club soon. It was scary to see the spots show up at first. Then, I researched and realized that it is pretty common and not really that big of a deal.
I'm sorry about your bird. ( It sounds like she probably had some underlying issues and maybe the pox just added another dimension that was too much for her. Who knows. Maybe even the antibiotics threw off her body enough to make it worse.

I just used Neosporin once. I did have one hen get a lot of lesions on her head, and her face swelled some and she did get some additional attention.

One morning about 3 weeks after it all started, I went out to find all the lesions gone. Overnight.

And yes, they are immune for life afterwards. Mine had it summer before last; no problem with it this summer.

Did the neosporin work?
