Last year around Christmas my flock started showing signs of fowl pox, so I vaccinated the asymptomatic birds and separated out the ones showing signs. Unfortunately, many more developed both the wet and dry pox after vaccination and we lost a bunch of birds despite round the clock care and veterinarian prescribed antibiotics for secondary infections they developed (gram negative bacteria).

This year, I bought chicks to replace the ones we lost and vaccinated them two and a half weeks ago at the age of about 11 weeks since some were bantams and I wanted their wings to get a bit larger before having to administer the vaccine into them.

Today, one of the new pullet’s face is covered in fowl pox scabs that weren’t there a week ago. So I have separated her out and I’m now dreading what’s to come. Has anyone had this happen before?

The other bad news, is one of my older hens randomly died yesterday, with no outward symptoms but I know from the last year she could have had wet pox in the throat /lungs that kills quickly. She didn’t have an obvious decline at all. I revaccinated all the older birds as well, as I read that was recommended for locations with high presence of fowl pox which I guess is what Mississippi has.

Any thoughts or advice on how this new pullet could have developed it? Did the vaccine not work? Or did she maybe preen her wing and get the vaccine in the wing web site in her face?
