Fowl pox what can be done to help with it?

I would not pick them off. You are going to open up more skin to infection and they may bleed and it seems like it would hurt too! If you want to put something like iodine on them to make you feel better it would not hurt but just let them heal and fall off on its own.

Those of mine that had bad cases, and there where many, had the scabs removed and iodine placed on the sores. Bleeding was minimal and none got infections. However, some already had secondary eye infections and those were treated wih baytril. Any birds not eating were tubed fluids, then fluids and food until they ate on their own.

For most cases I have but this hen is so bad she can't even open her eyes. She's found her food and water in her cage on the porch so I'm hopeful that she'll be ok. I lost 1 of my russian orloff hens this week who had a bad case of pox like this so not taking any chances with this girlie. If it will help her vision I will remove some to do so and let the others heal on their own.

Sorry every one for the delay but Cogburn is all better now but 3 of my flock did not fare so well to the fowl pox lost my black australorp my light brahma and one of my barred rocks

Sorry about your losses, but glad that Cogburn is better. What exactly did you do for them to help them get over the pox? How many got wet pox or complications? Did you use certain antibiotics or treatments? I'm asking just to educate everyone else who deals with this disease.

I didn't notice wet pox but what I did was pick off the scabs around his nostrils and eyes and used iodine on the sores and just made sure he are and drank

Sorry for your losses... I also lost a couple to dry pox last year, and I'm pretty sure they died from dehydration and starvation.

Is there anything that can be done to help with free roaming chickens that have this. They do not have a dedicated water source to put meds in. They will not let me catch them to try to medicate or help with scabs. Last year, only one clutch of four caught it and they all died. This year there are two separate clutches that came down with it about a week ago, totaling six, one of which is starting to fail. Several other clutches appear not to be affected. None of the adults are affected. All but one was born here, and none of them had it when they were young. These all started with some escapees from a fighting rooster ranch near me. I thought about putting meds in the corn kernels I give them every day, but would not be able to measure out doses. There are about 7 adults and 15 chicks at varying ages.

Hi All !

Is there no vaccine for this ? My favorite girl has it bad, started about 3 weeks ago, and today another girl has started. Feel so bad for them. I just got over a bad case of Chicken pox myself ( at 65 tears of age !!! ) Did I give it to them or they gave it to me ???? Hubby is pediatrician - bet he brought it home to all of us !! LOL !
