Fowltemptress' Poultry Presents: Board Games

Hi all, it’s so fun to find other board gamers on here! We had a regular in-person group until the pandemic and a wave of babies hit…now we just play 2-player games mostly.

My hubby is an inveterate Kickstarter person, and he just showed me flock together so I came on here to share — I see now that’s already been done! 😁

I just wish I had thought of Attila the Hen when I was picking my screen name for here! 😂

I know what you mean about "a wave of babies," and I love the word choice. They absolutely do come in waves!

My husband backed Flock Together on Kickstarter the moment it dropped, practically. I think mostly because he'd have a rabid wife on his hands otherwise. I love that the creators of the game are currently using the updates on kickstarter to share the real life breeds the characters were based on. I've known about dragon chickens, but it's always a shock to me when I see a picture of one!

Thanks for the heads up on Flock Together. I was aware of Kickstarters existence, but y’all have convinced me to make my first pledge 😁

In fact, I pledged two. I know someone else who would like it and I’d feel bad if it doesn’t eventually hit retail.

The brown leghorns in my flock do not have individual names. Rather, they're collectively known as "The Italian Mafia." I used to have four leghorns, but they're down to three after a bobcat ran off with one a few months ago. Sigh - having a hit put on you is just a part of mob life, I suppose.

Today, in true mob style, my little crime bosses would like to welcome you to Las Vegas. Presenting Lords of Vegas, where you'll be investing in this tiny city in order to build it up into the den of debauchery and sin that people know and, inexplicably, love today.

If you like Monopoly, you'll love Lords of Vegas. If you hate Monopoly, you'll also love Lords of Vegas. This modern game has a delightful old school feel, with lots of rolling of dice and paper money changing hands at a breakneck pace. The dice is used in an innovative way, representing how much power you wield in a casino, and every turn is jam packed with action as you decide where to invest, whether to initiate a hostile takeover or simply reorganize some casinos, and, yes, even whether to engage in a little (or a lot!) of gambling. The interaction between players is near constant, with very few restraints on what you can trade or bargain with in the game, so Lords of Vegas will satisfy those social gamers who love nothing more than to be mucking about in the plans of the other players. I do so enjoy destroying the hopes and dreams of my friends and family - in board games, that is!

The only thing missing from this version of Las Vegas is the grime, repulsiveness, and feelings of shame and despair.*

I truly believe this game should be right up there in terms of popularity with Catan since it's every bit as fun, easy to learn, and interactive, and has fewer of the issues you'll run into with Catan, such as unlucky dice rolls. Infuriating dice rolls in Lords of Vegas feel thematic and exciting, and it's wild to go from owning only one block in a casino and roll against a player who owns five blocks in the same casino, and wind up with majority power! That shouldn't happen, it should feel wrong and obnoxious, but it does happen, and it feels somehow right and thrilling, even when you're the loser in that play.

Lords of Vegas: Leghorn approved.

Anyone else enjoy board games? I moved away from an area where many people played board games as a hobby. I still play games with my husband, but sometimes I miss the weekly large gatherings for game nights we used to have. I've never met another board gamer who was also a poultry lover though, and I'm curious to see if more of that combination exists, and what sorts of tabletop games my fellow feather fans enjoy. My personal favorite game is Caverna. I love building up my own personal farm and putting cool little rooms in my cave/home. I'd love to hear of other folks' favorites.

Speaking of the worlds of poultry and board games colliding, I recently stumbled across a game that will be coming to Kickstarter soon. I loathe Kickstarter and promised to never back anything on it, but how can I be expected to resist this? The art alone is adorable enough to make me want it! I've been wishing for a decent chicken themed game for ages now, and this one's giving me high hopes. Anyone else maybe know of other poultry themed tabletop games I haven't heard of?
Theme is unrelated to poultry, but we love to play Catan! You can trade sheep, but not chickens.

Never played Scythe, but it's a beautiful game. Wingspan is pretty good, but it's almost too "nice."

Now Catan's a game that can never be accused of being too nice. Catan "can get heated" is an understatement!

Catan is like monopoly for adults. Love that game but can get heated 😅.
In our family it is a bit less about getting heated, and more that it takes sooooooooooo long. We have the expansion to play with more people because we have a bunch of kids, and a few grandparents who live close. By the end, everyone just wants it to be over.

We like wingspan with the older kids. Ticket to ride is fun too.

Taboo is a fun game for a group that's all old enough to read, and preferably have a little life experience to draw on.

Wits and Wagers is fun and little kids can do ok since the clues are often quite bizarre and no one has any idea of the answer.
