Fox attack! 12 chickens dead and abandoned.

Hi Yes, foxes can climb, as you know, 5yrs ago a fox wiped out 16 of my girls. We
have a 6ft wall on the back, of our garden, the 6ft fences from neighbours gardens.
Our coops were on top of garden, with top fenced off as we have dogs. It was my own
stupidity i one night i did not lock them all in, he jumped the wall and took them all. But
then could not get back over with any of them. Some were by the fence others scattered outside, and others in their coops. It was horrible but the reason, he left them, is because, they were to heavy for him to get back over. Otherwise he would have, so yes,
i truly believe it was a fox, now my husband has bulit new coops and run, with covers.
Further down the garden, we also bought 4 alarms. You know the ones, if anything goes near, they flash lights and make a screeching sound. (Not expensive.) I also still lock them in every night, cause after 5yrs it happened, i never want to see that again. Also sure
your Dad will do you proud, with securing new ones. Looked at your pics, and i believe
he jumped on coop and down, but could not manage to get back over with any. As he
would have, so like what happened with ours, i think it was a fox.
I’m absolutely certain ours was a fox as we have lost many chickens before due to foxes and it’s the only predator around who could climb a chicken coop.

I'm so sorry -- we had a similar loss yesterday. We normally allow our girls to free range along with our neighbor's birds. We've had a loss here and there, but nothing like yesterday. We lost 7 of 9 hens. Our neighbors lost at least 5 of their 20. All from a single red fox on a killing spree. Our kids were devastated. One of two surviving hens was injured, but she will survive. The only one untouched was a broody Buff Orpington, who was spared because she was in "chicken jail" because we are trying to break her broody streak. She must have been terrified, since was trapped in a cage in the coop where birds were being killed.

Your chickens were beautiful -- again, so sorry this happened.

I too am sorry for your loss. I am new to chickens and have only had 12 chicks, now down for 8, and it saddened me to give up the 4 even though they were going to a great home and I will see them occasionally. I count heads every time I check on them and every night in the coop. In this short time, they have become very dear to me so I can't image your feelings with so many gone at one time. I hope you and your family are able to heal and offer a good home to future chicks. Obviously they will be taken very good care of! And I hope you catch or run off those foxes!!
